Government Begins Nationwide Food Distribution to Combat Hunger and Poverty
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, Mr. Limpho Tau, officially informed the National Assembly on Friday that the government, through the Disaster Management Authority (DMA), has commenced food distribution to needy households across the country. Addressing the House, Mr. Tau expressed his apologies for the delay in making the statement, even though the distribution process had already begun earlier this week.
Mr. Tau emphasized that this initiative is aimed at alleviating extreme poverty and hunger, which currently affects over 700,000 households in the country. The food distribution effort is part of the government’s broader commitment to addressing the needs of vulnerable communities and providing relief during times of hardship.
The Minister highlighted that the Food Management Unit (FMU) stores across the country have received significant supplies, including 19,744 bags of food items such as maize, beans, and wheat grains, each weighing 50 kilograms. These supplies are crucial for supporting households in need during the current crisis.
In addition to the government’s efforts, Mr. Tau acknowledged that development partners are also playing an essential role in providing support for the food distribution initiative, strengthening the country’s response to food insecurity. This collaboration with development partners ensures that the initiative reaches the most affected areas, offering timely assistance to those who need it the most.
As the food distribution continues, the government remains focused on its goal of reducing poverty and hunger, aiming to provide much-needed relief to the nation’s most vulnerable citizens.
