On the 8th August, 2019, the National University of Lesotho conducted a Fire drill for NUL community in preparing people for the actual fire. This practice helps the community to know how to escape and what to do during actual fire. Fire is one of the disasters that are unpredictable happening every day in office buildings. It is very unfortunate that when a fire breaks out, employees’ lives can be on the line. Therefore, the Department of Safety and Security conducted a fire drill for NUL community to exit the building safely when the fire breaks out.
During the fire drill, Fire men and marshals showed employees various and alternative escape routes and assembly point. The Fire officer 11 Mr. Sello Molefi indicated that the Department decided to engage in such a wonderful practice so that NUL employees are always prepared for fire and they felt a need to engage in such an awareness.
The NUL Director Safety and Security, Mr. Pitso Lesia, expressed his satisfaction at the positive response and action by staff. He added that this unannounced drill more accurately measured NUL’s evacuation readiness.
“I am very happy with the response from NUL staff towards this exercise, really. Staff responded positively and were taking orders from our fire marshals and firemen. Staff was ready to learn the emergency procedures to be used in case of fire.”, Mr. Lesia thanked staff.
He added that there are other staff members who told him that they actually thought there is actually fire in the building and that approach was a sign that the exercise was a success.
NUL Acting Vice Chancellor Professor Manthoto Lephoto thanked the Department of Safety and Security for the awareness raising campaign and reminded everyone to treat matters of fire with urgency.
“Fire drills play a very important role in workplace fire safety to ensure your safe evacuation. Your response shows you are all saying, yes we are ready to be led even in circumstances like this one and let’s continue taking some things like this very serious in order to save our lives. When fire breaks”, Prof. Lephoto appreciated.
