“Between Africa’s Rivers” A Journey Through Africa’s Indigenous Instruments

Music lovers will soon have the opportunity to explore Africa one instrument at a time. Azania Jazz Co. has unveiled plans for Between Africa’s Rivers, a concept album built around fourteen indigenous African instruments. Each composition carries the name of its featured instrument, transforming the track list into a celebration of Africa’s musical heritage. Listeners will travel through the sounds of the Djembe, Talking Drum, Ngoma, Marimba, Balafon, Udu and other traditional instruments that have shaped communities across the continent for centuries.

Rather than recreating folk music, the collective combines these instruments with sophisticated jazz arrangements, allowing improvisation and harmony to reveal their expressive possibilities. The album’s title reflects movement rather than geography.Just as rivers connect distant communities, music has travelled between cultures, carrying stories, ceremonies and celebrations across generations.

The project aims to honour that legacy while introducing these remarkable instruments to contemporary audiences.
