Lesotho Government Commends UNICEF Representative Deepak Bhaskaran as He Concludes His Tour of Duty

The Kingdom of Lesotho has expressed its sincere appreciation to UNICEF Country Representative, Deepak Bhaskaran, following the conclusion of his tour of duty in the country. On 15 June 2026, Mr. Bhaskaran paid farewell courtesy calls on the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, Richard Ramoeletsi, as well as the Right Honourable Prime Minister, Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane. The meetings marked the end of a significant chapter in the partnership between UNICEF and the Government of Lesotho. Throughout his tenure, Mr. Bhaskaran worked closely with government institutions, development partners, and local communities to promote the welfare and rights of children across the country. His departure provides an opportunity to reflect on the progress achieved through collaborative efforts aimed at improving the lives of Basotho children and families.
During his time in Lesotho, UNICEF strengthened its partnership with the government through a wide range of programmes focused on key areas affecting children’s wellbeing. These initiatives included health services, education development, child protection systems, social policy support, and water, sanitation and hygiene programmes. The organisation’s work was guided by a shared commitment to ensuring that every child has access to opportunities that support healthy growth and development. Through close cooperation with national authorities and local stakeholders, UNICEF helped implement programmes designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing children and vulnerable communities. This partnership played an important role in supporting national development goals while advancing children’s rights throughout the country.
One of the major areas of focus during Mr. Bhaskaran’s tenure was improving child health and nutrition. UNICEF worked alongside government health institutions to support programmes aimed at reducing childhood illnesses, improving maternal and child healthcare services, and promoting proper nutrition among children. These efforts contributed to strengthening healthcare delivery systems and increasing awareness about the importance of child health in communities across Lesotho. Improved nutrition programmes also helped support the growth and development of children, particularly those living in vulnerable circumstances. By investing in healthcare and nutrition, UNICEF contributed to building a stronger foundation for the country’s future generations.
Education remained another important pillar of UNICEF’s work in Lesotho during this period. The organisation collaborated with the government to expand access to quality education and improve learning opportunities for children. Efforts focused not only on increasing school attendance but also on enhancing the quality of teaching and learning environments. UNICEF supported initiatives that sought to create inclusive educational systems capable of reaching children from diverse backgrounds, including those facing social and economic challenges. These interventions helped strengthen the education sector and reinforced the belief that education remains one of the most effective tools for empowering young people and breaking cycles of poverty.
The protection of children from violence, abuse, neglect, and exploitation was also a key priority under Mr. Bhaskaran’s leadership. UNICEF worked closely with government departments and community structures to strengthen child protection systems throughout the country. These programmes aimed to create safer environments where children could grow, learn, and thrive without fear of harm. Through policy support, capacity building, and community engagement, efforts were made to improve mechanisms for identifying and responding to cases involving vulnerable children. The strengthening of child protection frameworks has become an important component of broader efforts to safeguard children’s rights and wellbeing in Lesotho.
In addition to health, education, and child protection, UNICEF played a significant role in supporting social policy initiatives and programmes aimed at assisting vulnerable families. By working with government partners, the organisation helped strengthen social support systems designed to reduce poverty and improve resilience among households facing economic hardship. These interventions recognised the close connection between family wellbeing and child development. Supporting families through social protection measures helped create conditions that allow children to access essential services and opportunities. Such programmes have become increasingly important as communities continue to face social and economic challenges.
Water, sanitation and hygiene initiatives also formed an important part of UNICEF’s partnership with Lesotho. Access to clean water and proper sanitation facilities is essential for protecting public health and ensuring children’s wellbeing. UNICEF supported programmes that sought to improve water infrastructure, promote hygiene education, and enhance sanitation services in communities and schools. These efforts contributed to reducing health risks associated with poor sanitation and unsafe water sources. Improved access to clean water and hygiene facilities has had positive effects on children’s health, school attendance, and overall quality of life.
The farewell meetings held with senior government leaders reflected the strong relationship that developed between UNICEF and the Government of Lesotho during Mr. Bhaskaran’s tenure. The discussions provided an opportunity to acknowledge achievements, review the impact of ongoing programmes, and reaffirm the importance of continued collaboration in addressing the needs of children. Both government officials and UNICEF representatives have consistently emphasised the value of partnership in achieving sustainable development outcomes. The progress made over the years demonstrates what can be accomplished when national institutions and international organisations work together toward common goals. This cooperative approach remains essential for ensuring lasting improvements in children’s lives.
As Deepak Bhaskaran concludes his service in Lesotho, the Government of Lesotho has extended its gratitude for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to advancing the rights and wellbeing of children. The government has also expressed appreciation to UNICEF for its continued support and partnership in helping improve the lives of children and families across the country. The achievements realised during his tenure have strengthened important sectors and created opportunities for future progress. While his departure marks the end of an important assignment, the partnership between Lesotho and UNICEF continues with a shared commitment to building a brighter future for every child. The legacy of collaboration established during this period will remain an important foundation for ongoing efforts to promote child welfare, development, and opportunity throughout the Kingdom of Lesotho.
