Sebabatso Strengthens Youth Development in Lesotho Through Training of Trainers Workshop for District Youth Officers

Sebabatso is advancing youth empowerment in Lesotho through a focused two-day Training of Trainers workshop designed for District Youth Officers. The programme aims to strengthen the ability of officers to support, guide, and empower young people as they progress through the Sebabatso journey. The initiative responds to the growing need for structured mentorship and improved coordination in youth development services across all districts. It also reflects a national effort to build stronger systems that connect young people with opportunities for growth and innovation. By investing in training at district level, Sebabatso is reinforcing the foundation needed for long-term youth support.

The workshop was officially opened by the Minister of Gender, Youth and Social Development, Hon. Pitso Lesaoana, together with the UNDP Lesotho Resident Representative, Dr. Jacqueline Olweya. Their presence highlighted the importance of collaboration between government institutions and development partners in advancing youth-focused programmes. The opening session set the tone for discussions centered on improving service delivery to young people and strengthening the role of District Youth Officers. It also emphasized the need for practical skills that can be applied directly within communities. This leadership engagement reinforced the national commitment to empowering young people through structured and well-supported systems.

Throughout the workshop, representatives from Lesotho PostBank and other organizations supporting Sebabatso beneficiaries shared valuable insights on available opportunities. They also discussed their experiences in mentoring and supporting youth-led initiatives across the country. These contributions provided participants with a clearer understanding of how financial institutions and development partners can work together to support youth entrepreneurship and innovation. The exchange of ideas helped bridge the gap between institutional support and grassroots implementation. It also gave District Youth Officers practical knowledge on how to connect young people with relevant services and opportunities.

The training was initiated after the Department of Youth identified a need to better equip District Youth Officers with the tools and knowledge required to effectively support Sebabatso participants. Many young people rely on these officers for guidance, information, and access to development programmes. Strengthening their capacity ensures that support systems remain consistent and responsive across all districts. The workshop focused on addressing gaps in mentorship, communication, and programme coordination. It also aimed to build confidence among officers so they can better guide young people through different stages of their development journeys.

The second and final day of the workshop focused on practical tools, action planning, and approaches to youth coaching and mentorship. Participants engaged in hands-on sessions designed to improve how they interact with and support young people in real-world settings. These activities helped translate theoretical knowledge into practical skills that can be applied immediately within districts. The emphasis on action planning ensured that officers left with clear strategies for implementation in their respective areas. This practical approach strengthened the overall impact of the training and improved readiness for fieldwork.

By strengthening the capacity of District Youth Officers, Sebabatso is helping ensure that more young people across Lesotho can access information, opportunities, and structured support systems. The initiative plays a key role in building a more coordinated and effective youth development framework. It also supports the broader goal of turning youth ideas into impactful projects that contribute to local economic and social development. With better trained officers at district level, young people are more likely to receive timely guidance and meaningful assistance. This investment in human capacity reinforces Sebabatso’s commitment to empowering youth and building stronger communities across the country.
