Lesotho Strengthens United Nations Partnership as Prime Minister Matekane Welcomes New Resident Coordinator

The Kingdom of Lesotho has taken another step to deepen its international partnerships as Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane received a courtesy call from the newly appointed United Nations Resident Coordinator, Ms. Taija Mari Johanna Kontinen-Sharp. This meeting marked an important diplomatic moment following her recent presentation of Letters of Credence earlier in the month. It created a platform to formally welcome her into her role and set the tone for future collaboration. The engagement reflects Lesotho’s continued focus on building strong relationships with global institutions that support development. It also signals the government’s intent to align national priorities with international frameworks that drive measurable progress.
During the meeting, both parties reaffirmed the strong and longstanding partnership between Lesotho and the United Nations. This relationship has supported key development efforts across multiple sectors over the years. The Prime Minister emphasized the value of sustained cooperation in addressing the country’s socio economic challenges. The United Nations Resident Coordinator expressed commitment to strengthening coordination across UN agencies operating in Lesotho. This shared approach aims to improve efficiency and ensure that development programs deliver tangible results for communities.
The discussions placed strong focus on advancing Lesotho’s national development priorities. Inclusive governance emerged as a key area, with both sides recognizing the need for transparent systems that support accountability and citizen participation. Food security was also highlighted as a critical concern, especially in the context of climate variability and economic pressures. Youth empowerment formed another central pillar of the dialogue, given the high proportion of young people in the population and the need to expand employment opportunities. Access to social services, including healthcare and education, was also identified as essential for improving overall quality of life.
A major point of alignment was the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework for 2024 to 2028. This framework serves as a roadmap for collaboration between Lesotho and the United Nations, ensuring that efforts are aligned with the global Sustainable Development Goals. Both parties acknowledged that coordinated action under this framework can accelerate progress in key sectors. The framework provides clear targets and measurable indicators that guide implementation. It also ensures that development efforts remain focused, strategic, and responsive to the needs of the Basotho people.
The Government of Lesotho used the meeting to reaffirm its commitment to multilateralism. This approach remains central to the country’s strategy for achieving sustainable development and economic growth. By working closely with international partners, Lesotho can access technical expertise, funding, and global best practices. The Prime Minister emphasized that collaboration with the United Nations is essential for tackling complex challenges that require coordinated solutions. This includes issues such as poverty reduction, climate resilience, and social inclusion.
This engagement sets a clear direction for future cooperation between Lesotho and the United Nations. It establishes a shared understanding of priorities and strengthens the foundation for long term partnership. The focus on governance, food security, youth empowerment, and social services reflects a practical approach to addressing real challenges faced by citizens. Continued collaboration under the Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework will play a key role in driving progress. The meeting ultimately reinforces a commitment to improving livelihoods and creating sustainable opportunities for the people of Lesotho.
