Basotho Youth Shine at the Huawei ICT Competition South Africa

Three young innovators from Lesotho — Teboho Ntilane, Mosa Limpho Motsenene, and Maseabata Mokhotso — are representing the Kingdom of Lesotho at the Huawei ICT Competition in South Africa. Their journey began on 7 June 2025 when the Right Honourable the Prime Minister of Lesotho led Basotho youth on a tour of the Huawei offices in Johannesburg. This experience inspired them to pursue opportunities in the ICT sector and motivated them to apply for the competition. Competing alongside other talented young innovators from across Africa, they seized the chance to showcase their skills and creativity on a regional platform. Their involvement reflects not only individual ambition but also the potential of Basotho youth to excel in technology and digital innovation.
Currently, the three innovators are participating in the Huawei ICT Boot Camp in South Africa, where they are preparing for rigorous examinations. The boot camp provides intensive training in ICT concepts, problem-solving, and technical applications, equipping participants with skills that extend beyond the competition. If successful in their exams, they will advance to the Global Stage in China, carrying Lesotho’s flag and representing their nation on an international platform. This progression highlights the global opportunities available to young people who invest in ICT skills and digital literacy. Their preparation and dedication at the boot camp demonstrate a high level of commitment to personal development and national representation.
Their participation also highlights the growing role of Basotho youth in driving digital transformation within Lesotho. By competing internationally, these innovators demonstrate the ability of young people to solve complex problems, develop innovative solutions, and contribute to a knowledge-based economy. Their involvement sends a message to other young Basotho that careers in ICT and technology are attainable and impactful. Through this representation, they are not only pursuing personal goals but also embodying the ambitions of a nation seeking to build a competitive and digitally skilled workforce. Their success can inspire broader engagement in technology and innovation across the country.
The achievement of these young innovators reflects the support of stakeholders, partners, and institutions invested in youth development. Schools, government agencies, and private sector partners have all contributed to creating opportunities for Basotho youth to explore technology, develop skills, and gain exposure to international standards. This collaboration strengthens the foundation for sustainable growth in the ICT sector and ensures that young people have access to training, mentorship, and resources. Continued investment in youth development and digital skills is critical for building a future-ready workforce and positioning Lesotho as a competitive player in global technology markets.
The participation of Teboho Ntilane, Mosa Limpho Motsenene, and Maseabata Mokhotso in the Huawei ICT Competition signals a significant milestone for Basotho youth and the ICT sector in Lesotho. Their journey from local inspiration to regional competition demonstrates talent, dedication, and the potential of young innovators to impact national development. As they prepare for the possibility of competing on the global stage in China, they carry the aspirations of their nation and serve as role models for peers across Lesotho. By supporting youth in technology and innovation, Lesotho invests in a generation capable of driving economic growth, digital transformation, and sustainable development. Their success represents a collective achievement for the country and a bright future for Basotho innovation.
