Lesotho Strengthens Community Resilience Through Red Cross Disaster Response Training

The Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS), in collaboration with the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC), has successfully implemented Community-Based Disaster Response Team (CBDRT) training as part of the Emergency Appeal project. The initiative aims to equip local communities with critical skills to anticipate, prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters. Trainings were conducted for Semonkong teams from 18–20 February 2026, followed by Ha Ramabanta teams from 23–25 February 2026, providing targeted support to areas prone to climate-related and other emergencies. The programme reflects LRCS’s commitment to fostering community-driven preparedness, ensuring households can build resilience against shocks and stresses. By strengthening local capacities, the initiative seeks to minimize the impact of disasters and enhance recovery processes for vulnerable populations.
The training sessions focused on a broad range of skills essential for effective Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR). Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of Disaster Management, learning how to identify hazards, assess risks, and coordinate timely responses. The programme also incorporated climate-smart approaches, including sustainable agriculture practices, Integrated Pest and Disease Management, and seed harvesting techniques. First Aid skills were emphasized to ensure immediate support can be provided to affected individuals during emergencies. By integrating these elements, the training not only addresses immediate disaster risks but also promotes long-term community resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
Senior Branch Development Officer for Maseru District, Mr Mokholoane Sefatsana, stressed that the training empowers communities at the grassroots level, ensuring teams are ready to act effectively when disasters occur. He noted that combining disaster management with sustainable agriculture helps households manage both short-term emergencies and long-term challenges. This dual approach strengthens adaptive capacity, allowing communities to maintain productivity and food security even under adverse conditions. By building local knowledge and leadership, the programme enhances self-reliance and reduces dependency on external assistance during crises. The emphasis on community ownership ensures that the skills and practices learned are maintained beyond the training period.
The success of these training sessions was supported by collaboration with the Disaster Management Authority and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition. Their expertise provided technical guidance, ensuring the content was relevant, practical, and aligned with national disaster preparedness frameworks. Participants benefited from hands-on exercises and scenario-based learning, reinforcing their understanding of emergency protocols and response strategies. The involvement of multiple stakeholders strengthened coordination between government agencies and local communities, creating a more resilient disaster response network. This approach ensures that knowledge and best practices are shared widely and applied effectively across different regions.
Through the CBDRT training, Lesotho is taking proactive steps to strengthen community resilience and reduce the human and economic impacts of disasters. By equipping local teams with disaster management, first aid, and climate-smart agriculture skills, the initiative enhances both immediate response capacity and long-term sustainability. Communities are better prepared to face emergencies while simultaneously improving their livelihoods and food security. The programme demonstrates LRCS’s commitment to community-centered solutions and highlights the importance of collaboration with national authorities and international partners. As these trained teams continue their work, they contribute to a safer, more resilient Lesotho capable of withstanding climate and disaster-related challenges.
