Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development Hosts Debate and Public Speaking Event on Elderly Care

The Ministry of Gender, Youth and Social Development is hosting a debate and public speaking competition to raise awareness about the challenges and concerns affecting elderly citizens in communities. Learners from St. Joseph High School, New Millennium High School, and Itekeng High School are participating in the event at AME Hall. The main debate theme challenges students to discuss whether the state, rather than the family, should bear responsibility for the long-term care of the elderly in Lesotho. In addition to formal debates, the program includes poetry recitals and impromptu speeches, giving learners multiple platforms to express ideas and insights on social issues impacting older adults. The initiative aims to educate children about the needs of elderly citizens and foster empathy, while encouraging practical solutions that can improve their welfare.
The competition focuses on developing learners’ critical thinking, public speaking, and advocacy skills. Participants are judged on clarity, depth of analysis, argumentation, and the relevance of their proposed solutions. Poetry and impromptu speeches allow students to explore creative and personal perspectives, emphasizing the social and emotional dimensions of elderly care. By engaging young people in these discussions, the Ministry seeks to nurture future advocates who understand the importance of both family and societal support for older citizens.
The event also highlights intergenerational understanding and the role of communities in safeguarding the dignity and wellbeing of the elderly. Learners discuss issues such as healthcare access, social protection, and inclusion, proposing ideas that could inform community practices and government policies. Through structured debates and interactive public speaking exercises, students gain knowledge about elderly rights while developing leadership and problem-solving skills. The initiative reinforces the Ministry’s commitment to social development by combining education, creativity, and advocacy, ensuring learners leave motivated to contribute to the welfare of elderly members of society.
