Lesotho Focuses on Resource Mobilisation to Strengthen Economic Independence

The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, has emphasised the critical role of resource mobilisation in advancing the development of the Basotho nation. Speaking at a post-budget speech event in Maseru, she highlighted that strengthening domestic resource mobilisation is essential for reducing dependence on external funding and achieving self-sufficiency. Dr. Matlanyane noted that a resilient economy depends on improved tax compliance, efficient public spending, and enhanced accountability in the use of public funds. Her remarks underscored the importance of strategic management of national resources to support sustainable growth.
Dr. Matlanyane explained that the government is committed to broadening the revenue base through reforms that enhance tax administration and close existing loopholes. She stressed that the private sector, civil society, and individual citizens all play a vital role in ensuring that economic growth is sustainable. Collaboration across these groups is necessary to create a system where resources are optimally utilised and invested for long-term benefits. Her message reinforced that collective action is central to strengthening Lesotho’s financial resilience.
Highlighting the importance of strategic investment, Dr. Matlanyane pointed to key sectors such as agriculture, infrastructure, and human capital development as critical drivers of inclusive growth. Prudent fiscal management and targeted spending in these areas can improve livelihoods while promoting national development. She emphasised that resource mobilisation should go hand in hand with initiatives that support innovation, efficiency, and accountability across all levels of government.
The Minister called on all stakeholders to actively participate in supporting government measures aimed at boosting economic independence. She emphasised that sustainable development requires coordinated efforts that balance revenue generation, responsible spending, and investment in priority sectors. By fostering a culture of fiscal responsibility and collaboration, Lesotho can strengthen its economic foundations.
Dr. Matlanyane concluded by reaffirming that the government remains focused on long-term development goals. Strengthened domestic resource mobilisation, combined with strategic investments and collective action, is central to building a self-reliant, resilient, and inclusive economy that benefits all Basotho.
