Storm Mountain Diamond Mine Supports Sekiring Community with Livelihood Restoration Initiative

Storm Mountain Diamond (SMD) Mine recently handed over seedlings, garden tools, seeds, and chickens to the Sekiring community in an effort to restore livelihoods following the community’s resettlement. The handover ceremony took place on Wednesday at Kao, bringing together local leaders, government officials, and community members. The initiative is part of SMD’s broader commitment to supporting resettled families and ensuring that mining activities contribute positively to the socio-economic development of surrounding communities. By providing resources for agriculture and small-scale farming, SMD aims to enhance food security, create employment opportunities, and promote sustainable community development.

Minister of Environment and Forestry, Mr Letsema Adontsi, expressed appreciation for the handover and acknowledged the challenges that mining activities can bring, particularly their impact on grazing pastures. He emphasized that both mining and livestock sectors are vital for Lesotho’s economic growth and encouraged open communication between companies and communities to address challenges effectively. Mr Adontsi urged residents to value the support, noting that it arrives during a period when the national economy is under strain. He also commended the Sekiring community for maintaining and sustaining many of the projects initiated by the mine. The minister further highlighted that his ministry is tasked with making Lesotho greener and called on communities to plant trees and flowers to enhance their local environments.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Mr Thabo Mofosi, also praised SMD’s initiative, highlighting its alignment with the mandates of multiple government ministries. He pointed out that food production and nutrition are central to national development, as agricultural activity provides employment, improves diets, and strengthens the economy. Mr Mofosi noted that when communities have access to local food and income, migration in search of work is reduced, contributing to more stable communities. He additionally encouraged support for the Mahakoe-a-Kao project, which produces cleaning detergents, emphasizing the potential for its expansion beyond the local area.

SMD Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Neo Hoala, explained that the initiative reflects the mine’s ongoing commitment to restoring livelihoods for families affected by resettlement during the start of mining operations. She emphasized that the support package, which includes agricultural tools, seeds, and livestock, is intended to empower households to generate income, improve nutrition, and sustain local projects over the long term. The CEO added that the company views these activities as essential to fostering positive relationships with communities and ensuring that mining contributes to broader social and economic development.

The handover event at Kao underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between the private sector, government, and local communities in building resilient and sustainable livelihoods. By providing the resources and technical support needed for small-scale farming and agricultural initiatives, SMD Mine is helping the Sekiring community achieve self-sufficiency while mitigating the socio-economic impacts of resettlement. The initiative also reinforces the role of responsible mining in promoting local development, environmental stewardship, and community well-being across Lesotho.
