Lumpy Skin Disease in Lesotho: Ministry Runs Out of Medication Amid Rising Infections

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition in Lesotho has reported a shortage of lumpy skin disease medication. The medication, previously collected from unaffected districts and distributed to areas with outbreaks, is now depleted. Mr. Lereko Masupha, Chief Information Officer of the Ministry, confirmed the shortage in an interview. He explained that the rate of infection is increasing, prompting the Ministry to prioritize affected districts while waiting for new supplies. “The Ministry is in the process of purchasing lumpy skin medication and will distribute it immediately when it is available,” Masupha said.

Minister Thabo Mofosi addressed the situation during a press conference, reporting that 448 cattle have been infected, with 19 deaths. He noted the disease has been detected in Leribe, Berea, Botha-Bothe, Maseru, Mafeteng, Mohale’s Hoek, and Thaba-Tseka districts. No cases have been reported in Quthing, Qacha’s Nek, or Mokhotlong. To combat the outbreak, the Ministry has prepared a detailed work plan. Veterinary doctors will be deployed to affected areas to vaccinate cattle and reduce the spread of the disease. The Minister urged the public to avoid consuming livestock that has been sick.

Current reports show the distribution of infections as follows: Leribe 142, Berea 33, Botha-Bothe 36, Maseru 63, Mafeteng 45, Mohale’s Hoek 28, and Thaba-Tseka 1. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing vaccination and public awareness as critical measures to control the outbreak and protect livestock health. This outbreak highlights the urgent need for timely medication and proactive veterinary support in managing livestock diseases in Lesotho.
