Lesotho Advances Digital Services and ICT Development Across Key Sectors

Lesotho is intensifying efforts to improve digital services and expand the use of information and communication technology (ICT) across critical sectors. The Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mr. Kanono Ramashamole, described a recent visit from Ms. Halima Letamo of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) as a significant milestone in the country’s digital transformation agenda. The visit aimed to strengthen collaboration and explore innovative solutions to integrate technology into national development.

Ms. Letamo, who leads the ITU Area Office for Southern Africa, met with key stakeholders including the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) and the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. Discussions focused on leveraging ICT to enhance governance and sectoral performance, with a special emphasis on agriculture. Mr. Ramashamole highlighted that the exchange of ideas during the visit would help identify practical approaches to applying technology to address national challenges.

A key area of focus was the integration of digital tools such as artificial intelligence and chatbots into agriculture. Mr. Ramashamole explained that these tools will allow farmers to type in the problems they encounter and receive immediate responses from digital platforms. This approach is expected to improve efficiency, reduce delays in accessing expert advice, and enhance productivity across the agricultural sector. A formal implementation plan will be developed in 2026, incorporating feedback from Ms. Letamo and local stakeholders.

During her visit, Ms. Letamo expressed appreciation for the warm reception and highlighted ITU’s mission to advance ICT and telecommunications. She emphasized the central role of ICT in economic development and the importance of strong regulatory frameworks to support growth. She also underscored the critical connection between technology and food security, stating, “Food is life,” and advocating for the use of digital solutions to strengthen Lesotho’s agricultural systems.

Mr. Ramashamole concluded that the government’s strategy involves building robust digital foundations, referred to as “digital strings,” to improve access and usability of technology for all Basotho. He explained that these digital strings will create a network of connected platforms that support education, governance, and business. The initiative aims to ensure that citizens can effectively leverage technology in their daily lives, improving efficiency and access to information.

Experts note that Lesotho’s push for digital development aligns with global trends and has the potential to transform critical sectors. Successful integration of ICT in agriculture and governance could enhance productivity, support innovation, and provide long-term economic benefits. By investing in technology and digital infrastructure, Lesotho positions itself to achieve sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for its citizens.

The ITU visit marks a key step in the country’s digital journey, emphasizing collaboration, innovation, and practical implementation. With strategic planning and stakeholder engagement, Lesotho is set to strengthen its digital ecosystem and harness technology for national development.
