LNDC and UNFPA Lesotho Forge Strategic Partnership to Advance Youth Empowerment and Inclusive Economic Development

The Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) has taken an important step toward strengthening youth empowerment and promoting inclusive economic growth through a new partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA Lesotho). On 7 July 2026, the two organizations officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), establishing a framework for long-term collaboration that combines economic development with social empowerment. The agreement reflects a shared commitment to creating greater opportunities for Basotho, particularly young people and women, by addressing both economic and social challenges. By bringing together the expertise of a national development institution and a United Nations agency, the partnership aims to contribute to a more resilient and inclusive economy. The initiative also demonstrates the growing recognition that sustainable development depends on investing in people as much as infrastructure and industry.

The new partnership is closely aligned with LNDC’s Letsema Strategy for 2026 to 2031, which places people at the heart of Lesotho’s economic transformation. The strategy recognizes that lasting economic growth can only be achieved when citizens are equipped with the skills, knowledge and opportunities needed to participate fully in the economy. Through collaboration with organizations such as UNFPA Lesotho, LNDC intends to strengthen initiatives that improve livelihoods while promoting social inclusion across different sectors. The Letsema Strategy emphasizes cooperation between public institutions, development partners and the private sector to unlock opportunities that benefit communities throughout the country. This people-centered approach reflects a broader vision of ensuring that economic progress reaches all Basotho.

A major focus of the Memorandum of Understanding is the advancement of youth development and skills enhancement. Young people represent one of Lesotho’s greatest assets, and preparing them for meaningful participation in the economy remains a national priority. Through this partnership, LNDC and UNFPA Lesotho will work together to provide initiatives that strengthen skills development while helping young people build the confidence and knowledge required for future employment and entrepreneurship. Investing in youth development not only improves individual opportunities but also contributes to increased productivity and innovation across the national economy. Empowering young people with relevant skills creates a stronger foundation for sustainable economic growth and long-term prosperity.

The collaboration will also prioritize education and awareness around Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR), recognizing the important role that health and well-being play in economic participation. Access to accurate information and supportive services enables individuals to make informed decisions that positively affect their personal lives and future opportunities. Promoting SRHR awareness contributes to healthier communities while supporting workforce participation and social development. The inclusion of these issues within the partnership highlights a comprehensive approach that considers both economic and human development. By integrating health education into broader development initiatives, the partnership seeks to improve overall quality of life for young people across Lesotho.

Another important objective of the partnership is preventing and responding to Gender-Based Violence (GBV) as well as strengthening efforts related to the Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA). Safe and respectful working environments are essential for attracting investment, supporting employee well-being and promoting equal opportunities for all workers. Through joint initiatives, LNDC and UNFPA Lesotho aim to raise awareness, encourage prevention measures and strengthen workplace policies that protect employees from violence, exploitation and abuse. These efforts are particularly significant within Lesotho’s manufacturing and mining sectors, where the partnership seeks to promote safer and more inclusive workplaces. Creating environments where workers feel protected and respected contributes to stronger businesses and healthier communities.

The partnership also recognizes the importance of preparing young people for meaningful participation in Lesotho’s evolving economy. Beyond technical skills, future workers require knowledge of workplace ethics, personal development, communication and responsible citizenship to succeed in modern industries. By combining economic development initiatives with social empowerment programmes, LNDC and UNFPA Lesotho aim to equip young Basotho with the practical skills needed to contribute effectively to national development. This integrated approach helps ensure that economic opportunities are matched by investments in human capital. As industries continue to evolve, building a skilled and socially empowered workforce will remain essential for maintaining competitiveness and encouraging sustainable growth.

Speaking on behalf of LNDC, Chief Executive Officer Mr. Thabo Khasipe reaffirmed the corporation’s commitment to the partnership and emphasized that investing in people is fundamental to achieving sustainable economic growth. His remarks underscore the belief that economic development extends beyond infrastructure and investment to include education, health, equality and human potential. The collaboration between LNDC and UNFPA Lesotho reflects the spirit of partnership and shared responsibility in addressing the country’s development priorities. By combining economic transformation with social inclusion, the two organizations are working toward creating greater opportunities for Basotho, especially young people and women. As this strategic partnership begins to take shape, it has the potential to strengthen Lesotho’s workforce, promote inclusive development and contribute to building a more productive, equitable and prosperous future for the nation.
