Lesotho and India Strengthen Bilateral Relations at the 6th Joint Bilateral Commission of Cooperation in New Delhi

The Kingdom of Lesotho and the Republic of India have reaffirmed their commitment to expanding their long standing partnership following the successful hosting of the 6th Joint Bilateral Commission of Cooperation (JBCC) in New Delhi on 30 July 2026. The high level meeting brought together senior government officials from both countries to review progress made in their bilateral relationship and identify new opportunities for cooperation across a range of strategic sectors. The discussions reflected the shared determination of Lesotho and India to build on decades of friendship through stronger diplomatic engagement, economic collaboration and development partnerships. As global challenges continue to evolve, both countries emphasized the importance of maintaining regular dialogue and pursuing practical initiatives that deliver mutual benefits. The 6th Session was co chaired by Ambassador Janesh Kain, Joint Secretary for East and Southern Africa in the Ministry of External Affairs of the Republic of India, and Mr Thabang Polycarp Lekhela, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations of the Kingdom of Lesotho. Senior officials from both governments actively participated in the discussions, representing a wide range of ministries and institutions. The Lesotho delegation included representatives from the country’s diplomatic mission in New Delhi as well as officials from the Ministries of Trade, Business Development, Education and Training, Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition and Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture. This broad representation reflected the comprehensive nature of the partnership and the importance both countries place on expanding cooperation across multiple sectors. An important feature of the discussions was India’s renewed invitation for Lesotho to join the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. These international initiatives provide valuable platforms for cooperation in renewable energy, climate resilience and sustainable infrastructure development. Membership in the International Solar Alliance would offer Lesotho opportunities to strengthen its renewable energy capacity while supporting efforts to increase access to clean and affordable energy. Participation in the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure would also enhance collaboration on building infrastructure capable of withstanding the growing impacts of climate related disasters. These initiatives align with broader international efforts to promote sustainable development while strengthening resilience against future environmental challenges.

Both delegations concluded the meeting by agreeing that the 7th Session of the Lesotho India Joint Bilateral Commission of Cooperation will be held in Maseru on dates to be agreed upon. Hosting the next session in Lesotho will provide another opportunity to review progress on commitments made during the New Delhi meeting while advancing new areas of cooperation. The continued alternation of meeting venues reflects the equal partnership that has characterized relations between the two countries since the commission was established.
