Lesotho Hosts First UNESCO Global Geopark Meeting for Maletsunyane Falls-Semonkong Initiative

The Ministry of Tourism, Sports, Arts and Culture of Lesotho, in collaboration with the National Commission for UNESCO, convened the first meeting to establish the Maletsunyane Falls-Semonkong Proposed UNESCO Global Geopark on March 24, 2026. This initiative represents a significant step toward leveraging Lesotho’s unique geological heritage for conservation, education, and sustainable development. Maletsunyane Falls, renowned as one of Africa’s tallest single-drop waterfalls, serves as a focal point for promoting both tourism and environmental stewardship in the region. By engaging local communities and stakeholders from the outset, the programme aims to create a model for integrated management that balances ecological preservation with socio-economic benefits. The meeting marked the beginning of a collaborative effort to set up a dedicated committee that will guide the development and management of the proposed geopark.

A wide range of stakeholders attended the meeting, reflecting the diverse expertise required to support the project. Representatives included academics from the National University of Lesotho’s Geography and History Department, operators from Semonkong Lodge, organisers of Maletsunyane Braaifest, officials from the Semonkong Visitor Facility, the Ministry of Mining, the Semonkong Urban Council, and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. Their combined knowledge in geology, tourism, cultural heritage, and environmental management positions the committee to address multiple dimensions of geopark development. The inclusion of both government and community representatives ensures that local voices are integrated into planning decisions, promoting ownership and sustainable outcomes. This multi-stakeholder approach aligns with UNESCO’s standards for geopark governance and management.

The proposed Maletsunyane Falls-Semonkong Geopark aims to highlight Lesotho’s geological significance while providing opportunities for education and community development. UNESCO Global Geoparks are designated regions where geological heritage of international importance is conserved in a holistic manner. They are managed to promote awareness of Earth sciences, support sustainable tourism, and provide social and economic benefits to local populations. By establishing this geopark, Lesotho can position itself within a global network of protected areas that emphasise learning, environmental responsibility, and cultural engagement. The project also opens avenues for research collaboration, educational programs, and eco-tourism initiatives that can generate income for the Semonkong community.

The committee established through the meeting will focus on practical planning, conservation strategies, and capacity-building initiatives to ensure the geopark’s success. It will work closely with the Semonkong community to integrate local knowledge and cultural heritage into the management framework. Sustainable practices, such as regulated visitor access, environmental monitoring, and promotion of eco-friendly tourism, will be central to the geopark’s operations. Additionally, the initiative aims to enhance public awareness about the importance of geological heritage and its role in broader environmental and socio-economic development. Through education and engagement, the geopark can become a platform for fostering environmental stewardship among residents and visitors alike.

The first UNESCO Global Geopark meeting represents a major milestone for Lesotho’s efforts to combine conservation, education, and sustainable development in the Semonkong region. By mobilising government agencies, local communities, and academic institutions, the country is laying a strong foundation for the successful designation and management of the Maletsunyane Falls-Semonkong Proposed Geopark. The initiative highlights Lesotho’s commitment to protecting its natural heritage while creating opportunities for tourism, research, and local economic growth. As the committee begins its work, the project promises to serve as a model for integrated geopark development in Africa. This collaborative effort ensures that the geological, ecological, and cultural value of Maletsunyane Falls and the surrounding area will be preserved for future generations.
