Lesotho Government Enhances Correctional Services with New Vehicles and Blankets

On December 9, 2025, the government of Lesotho strengthened national security and law enforcement efficiency by donating nine vehicles and 3,000 blankets to the Lesotho Correctional Services (LCS). The handover ceremony took place at the LCS headquarters in Maseru, marking a significant investment in the country’s correctional system.
Deputy Prime Minister Justice Nthomeng Majara emphasized that the vehicles represent more than just logistical assets. She explained that transport is one of the most critical components of any effective correctional system. “Vehicles are not just machines, but instruments of justice, security and rehabilitation,” Majara said, underlining the government’s focus on both the safety of inmates and operational efficiency within correctional institutions.
Minister of Law and Justice Hon. Richard Ramoeletsi highlighted that the investment reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening internal security and upholding the rule of law. He noted that the resources demonstrate a broader strategy to modernize correctional services and ensure law enforcement can respond effectively to emergencies.
Acting Commissioner of the Lesotho Correctional Service, Mr. Matingoe Phamotse, detailed the practical benefits of the new resources. The vehicles will enhance emergency response, improve logistical coordination, and facilitate access to remote correctional facilities. The 3,000 blankets will provide essential comfort and improve the wellbeing of inmates, particularly during extreme weather, ensuring humane conditions are maintained across the correctional system.
This initiative shows the government’s commitment to reinforcing the capacity of law enforcement institutions. By equipping the Lesotho Correctional Services with modern vehicles and essential resources, the government aims to improve operational efficiency, support rehabilitation efforts, and uphold the safety and dignity of all individuals within correctional facilities. The handover represents a tangible investment in national security and the humane treatment of inmates, positioning Lesotho’s correctional system for more effective service delivery in the future.
