UAE Donates 400 Laptops to Boost IT Education in Lesotho

The Ministry of Education and Training received 400 laptops and other IT gadgets from the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through its Embassy in Maseru on Monday. The donation aims to enhance Information Technology (IT) education in schools across Lesotho and strengthen digital learning initiatives.

During the handover ceremony, Minister of Education and Training, Professor Ntoi Rapapa, highlighted that the donation follows a meeting in Cape Town where developed countries pledged support to Lesotho in advancing IT education. He noted that this contribution is the first of its kind and will significantly improve access to digital resources for students.

Professor Rapapa explained that the laptops will be initially distributed to 10 primary schools. An additional 100 laptops will be allocated to two more schools, bringing the total number of beneficiary schools to 12. He emphasized that the equipment will support both teaching and learning, enhancing students’ IT skills while providing teachers with tools to improve academic performance.

Speaking on behalf of the UAE government, Embassy Counsellor Ms. Fatima Al Suwaidi said the donation reflects the UAE’s commitment to supporting education and digital transformation in Lesotho. She stressed that education is a key pillar of sustainable development and expressed hope that the laptops will empower learners with essential digital skills.

Ms. Al Suwaidi also reaffirmed the UAE’s dedication to strengthening bilateral relations with Lesotho and supporting initiatives that promote innovation and capacity building in the education sector.

The Principal of St. James Primary School, Mrs. ‘Malipuo Molapo, welcomed the donation, noting that it will benefit students by improving their IT knowledge and assist teachers in accessing information to boost overall academic performance. This initiative is expected to play a key role in advancing digital literacy and modern learning practices across Lesotho.
