Judge Demands Guns Used in Radio Presenter’s Murder Before Sentencing

Judge Ts’eliso Mokoko has ordered investigators to produce the firearms used in the murder of Ralikonelo “Leqhashasha” Joki, a well-known radio presenter, before proceeding with the sentencing of the accused.
The four men, Mothusi Tlelase, Moabi Sesioana, Sootho Liphoto, and Kamo Phakoe, were convicted not only of Joki’s murder but also of the killings of Mothibe Mothibe and Thomello Ntsane. The case has drawn attention due to the high-profile nature of the victims and concerns over missing evidence.
During the trial, the Crown revealed that the AK47 cartridges and bullets could not be submitted as evidence because some exhibits were missing. The defence argued that this missing evidence was critical, asserting that the bullets and cartridges were not fired from their clients’ guns.
Judge Mokoko stressed the importance of presenting the actual firearms before sentencing, noting potential risks in police handling of unlicensed weapons. He expressed concern that such firearms could be misused or rented to criminals if not properly secured. The guns are currently stored at Police Headquarters, awaiting destruction procedures, and will need to be examined to ensure proper handling and accountability. The judge’s directive underscores the need for complete and verified evidence in high-profile criminal cases, particularly when public safety and procedural integrity are involved.
