The Ministry of Law and Justice held a Human Rights Symposium today in Maseru, convening government officials, civil society representatives, and development partners to evaluate Lesotho’s human rights landscape.

Honourable Deputy Attorney General Makhele Sekati reaffirmed Lesotho’s commitment to international and regional human rights treaties. He highlighted achievements including the establishment of the National Human Rights Commission, progress in drafting human rights legislation, and active participation in regional and international forums.

Deputy Attorney General Sekati stated that the symposium focused on assessing national progress, reviewing ongoing initiatives, and identifying opportunities to advance human rights, with particular attention to combating gender-based violence. He acknowledged the support of development partners, particularly the European Union, for their financial and technical contributions to the event.

Mrs ‘Makatleho ‘Molotsi from the Human Rights Unit of the Ministry of Law and Justice officially opened the symposium, welcoming participants and outlining its purpose: to review current human rights initiatives, assess their impact, and identify areas for improvement.

The European Union Representative, Ms Marcella Veneziani, reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to ending gender-based violence in Lesotho during the 16 Days of Activism against GBV. She highlighted the importance of raising awareness, supporting victims, and strengthening institutions such as the Human Rights Unit and the Lesotho Mounted Police.

Human rights defender and gender, sex, and sexuality activist Tampose Mothopeng noted that the LGBT Rights Symposium provided a critical platform for reflection, accountability, and action. He highlighted progress in national reforms, including the adoption of the 10th Amendment, protections for LGBT individuals, and recognition of the Sugi language at the United Nations.

Mothopeng added that the symposium recommended the development of a national policy against hate crimes, improved access to justice, and equitable health services for all. He emphasized the need to address ongoing challenges while acknowledging the achievements made in promoting an inclusive and just society.

The symposium concluded with a shared commitment to collaboration among government, civil society, and international partners to advance human rights and ensure their protection for all Basotho.
