Portugal Supports WFP School Feeding Initiative in Lesotho with 50 000 Euros Contribution

Following the presentation of his Letters of Credence to His Majesty King Letsie III, His Excellency Carlos Costa Neves, Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic to Lesotho, participated in a Commemoration Ceremony recognizing Portugal’s support to the World Food Programme (WFP) in Lesotho. The ceremony honoured a generous contribution of 50,000 Euros from the Government of Portugal towards the WFP School Feeding Initiative, a programme that provides food and nutrition security for vulnerable children across the country.

The event included formal remarks from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations, the Embassy of Portugal, and the World Food Programme. Speakers highlighted the long-standing partnership between Lesotho and Portugal and reaffirmed their shared commitment to improving the well-being of Basotho learners.

Following the signing ceremony, Ambassador Neves and the Deputy Ambassador engaged with the WFP team and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to gain a deeper understanding of WFP’s operations and impact in Lesotho. Discussions focused on strengthening cooperation and exploring further areas where Portugal’s support can contribute to national development priorities.

Lesotho and Portugal have maintained warm diplomatic relations since 1976. The contribution to the WFP School Feeding Initiative demonstrates Portugal’s continued solidarity and commitment to supporting Lesotho’s development, particularly in the areas of education, nutrition, and child welfare.
