Senate Approval of Tenth Amendment Bill Signals Major Progress in Lesotho’s National Reforms

The recent passing of the Tenth Amendment Bill to the Constitution in Lesotho’s Senate marks a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing national reforms process. This development is being hailed as a clear sign that Lesotho is making steady progress towards strengthening democracy, governance, and the rule of law.

Speaking on the matter, the Principal Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Law and Justice (MoLJ), Mr. Lira Ralebese, emphasized the importance of this achievement. He described the Senate’s approval as a critical step forward in aligning Lesotho’s legal framework with the broader national reform agenda.

Mr. Ralebese noted that the Ministry of Law and Justice now carries an even greater responsibility to ensure that its operations, policies, and strategies fully support the objectives of the reforms. “It is to this effect that the Ministry must be seen now more than ever to be moving in a direction that aligns well with the reforms in order to uplift the justice system,” he stated.

The Tenth Amendment Bill is part of a series of legislative changes that aim to modernize Lesotho’s Constitution, enhance governance structures, and address historical challenges that have hindered political stability and socio-economic development.

According to Mr. Ralebese, the Ministry’s next focus will be on implementing the necessary administrative and legal measures to ensure the amendments are fully realized in practice. This includes reviewing existing laws, improving judicial processes, and strengthening institutions that are central to justice delivery.

Stakeholders across government, civil society, and the legal sector have welcomed the passing of the Bill, viewing it as a vital turning point in Lesotho’s reform journey. Many believe it lays a strong foundation for long-term peace, justice, and constitutional governance.

As the reforms continue to unfold, the Ministry of Law and Justice has committed to working closely with all partners and the Basotho nation to ensure that the changes bring real benefits to the people of Lesotho.
