Lesotho to Mark World Oral Health Day with National Event in Quthing

Lesotho’s national event to commemorate World Oral Health Day is scheduled to take place on August 22, 2025, at Liphakoe Pitso Ground in Upper Moyeni, Quthing. The announcement was made by the District Health Manager, Dr. Makarant’si Mohlapiso, during a recent Heads of Departments meeting aimed at briefing stakeholders about the upcoming celebration.

This year’s event will run under the theme “A Happy Mouth is a Happy Mind,” highlighting the vital connection between oral health and mental wellbeing. Dr. Mohlapiso stressed that preparations for the event are a collective responsibility and not just the mandate of the Department of Health. He called upon all government departments and community stakeholders to lend their support to ensure the event’s success.

During the same meeting, District Public Health Nurse, Nursing Sister ‘Mateboho Mothupi, presented the official plan for the National Oral Health Day celebration. She elaborated on the chosen theme, noting that it aims to raise awareness about how oral health and mental health are closely linked. Sister Mothupi explained that poor oral health can negatively affect mental wellbeing, while mental health conditions can, in turn, make it difficult for individuals to maintain good oral hygiene.

The upcoming event is expected to feature educational talks, oral health screenings, community outreach programs, and interactive sessions designed to promote better oral hygiene practices among residents. Health officials hope the campaign will encourage individuals and families across Lesotho to adopt healthier oral care habits.

By hosting this national celebration in Quthing, the Ministry of Health seeks to bring essential oral health education and services closer to rural communities, where access to dental care remains a challenge. The event reflects Lesotho’s broader efforts to improve public health outcomes and foster healthier, happier communities across the nation.
