Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane Arrives at Lesotho Mission in New York Ahead of UN General Assembly

Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane has arrived at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations in New York, where he received a briefing from ministers and senior government officials. The meeting comes on the eve of the official opening of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, which begins tomorrow.
The briefing served as a strategic session to align Lesotho’s priorities and strengthen the country’s engagement in this year’s high-level discussions. The Prime Minister is expected to join world leaders in debates on peace, security, sustainable development, and global cooperation.
Government officials at the Permanent Mission outlined Lesotho’s key focus areas, including climate change, food security, economic growth, and strengthening multilateral ties. These discussions are central to ensuring that Lesotho’s voice is effectively represented on the global stage.
The United Nations is an international organization created in 1945 after the Second World War. It was founded by 51 countries that committed to maintaining peace, building strong international relations, and promoting human rights and social progress. Today, the UN has 193 Member States.
The UN was born out of global discussions that took place during the final years of the Second World War. In 1944, leaders of the United Kingdom, China, the United States, and the Soviet Union met at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, DC. They drafted a framework for an international body that could prevent future wars and foster cooperation.
The final structure of the UN was agreed upon at the San Francisco Conference, held from April to June 1945. Delegates from 50 nations attended, and on 26 June 1945 they signed the Charter of the United Nations. Poland, which was unable to send a representative, later signed as the 51st founding member.
Purposes of the United Nations
The United Nations operates under four central purposes defined in its Charter:
- To keep peace throughout the world.
- To develop friendly relations among nations.
- To help nations work together to fight hunger, disease, and illiteracy, while encouraging respect for rights and freedoms.
- To act as a center where nations harmonize their actions to achieve these goals.
The UN has since grown into the world’s most significant international body, addressing global challenges ranging from conflict and humanitarian crises to environmental protection and sustainable development.
As the General Assembly opens, Prime Minister Matekane’s participation highlights Lesotho’s commitment to multilateralism and collective solutions to global challenges. His engagements are expected to focus on strengthening partnerships that can support the country’s economic development, resilience to climate change, and long-term social stability.
Lesotho’s presence at this year’s UN General Assembly underscores the importance of small states having a platform to influence global policy while working toward national growth and sustainable futures.
