Ministry of Trade Hosts Media Workshop on Lesotho Standards Institution in Maseru

On Monday, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development convened a media sensitisation workshop in Maseru to raise awareness about the Lesotho Standards Institution (LSI). The workshop aimed to educate journalists and media practitioners on the role and importance of LSI in promoting quality, safety, and compliance across Lesotho’s industries.

The session highlighted LSI’s mandate to develop, implement, and monitor national standards for goods and services. Participants were briefed on how adherence to these standards supports consumer protection, enhances product quality, and strengthens the competitiveness of Lesotho’s businesses in regional and international markets.

Speakers emphasized that media plays a critical role in communicating the value of standards to the public and industry stakeholders. By reporting accurately on compliance issues, certifications, and quality benchmarks, the media can help foster a culture of accountability and excellence among producers and service providers.

The workshop also addressed the challenges facing local industries, including limited awareness of standards, insufficient technical capacity, and gaps in enforcement. Strategies were shared on how media coverage can support industry compliance, stimulate investment, and encourage innovation while protecting consumer interests.

Officials from the Ministry and LSI urged journalists to use their platforms to educate the public on the importance of quality assurance and standards. They stressed that promoting awareness of LSI’s work is essential for boosting Lesotho’s economic growth and ensuring that local products meet both domestic and international requirements.

The workshop concluded with a call for ongoing collaboration between LSI, the Ministry, and the media. By working together, they aim to ensure that standards are widely understood, implemented, and respected, creating safer products, stronger businesses, and a more competitive economy for Lesotho.
