Maluti Adventist College Nursing Students Tackle Diaper Disposal Challenge in Likoting Village

Nursing students from Maluti Adventist College visited Chief Nyeoe Lekomola’s premises in Likoting village as part of their community project under primary healthcare. The visit focused on engaging with villagers on health challenges and promoting practical lifestyle changes.
Student representative Kholu Matete said the main goal was to identify the pressing concerns of the community. “Villagers raised several concerns including water cleanliness, theft, and littering. However, the major issue raised was the improper disposal of used diapers,” she explained.
According to Matete, previous student groups had introduced communal trash bins for diaper disposal. The initiative did not succeed because the bins quickly overflowed and there was no reliable waste management system to handle them. “Villagers have now asked that these bins be removed,” she added.
To provide a sustainable solution, the current group proposed that each household with babies dig disposal pits in their yards. The students have already compiled a list of families with young children who will receive training on how to dig and properly use these pits for diaper disposal. Training is scheduled for the following week.
The project reflects the core objectives of primary healthcare, which emphasize preventive measures, community participation, and practical solutions to local health issues. By encouraging households to take responsibility for waste management, the students aim to reduce environmental pollution and improve hygiene standards in Likoting village.
The initiative also strengthens collaboration between healthcare students and local communities, creating a foundation for sustainable health practices beyond the scope of the project. For Likoting residents, the visit offered not only awareness but also an actionable plan to address a long-standing problem that directly affects community well-being.
