Africa Advances Digital Transformation with New Consultation on DTS Implementation

Yesterday, Mr Kanono Ramashamole, Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation (MICSTI), participated in a virtual consultation as Chair of the Experts Group of the African Union’s Specialised Technical Committee on Communications and ICT (STC-CICT).

The consultation marks the first step in reviewing the Draft Report on the Implementation of Africa’s Digital Transformation Strategy (DTS) 2020–2030. The review process has been ongoing since June 2024 and aims to assess progress and refine strategies to drive digital growth across the continent.

Mr Ramashamole highlighted four key areas central to Africa’s digital future. Connectivity for All focuses on innovative methods to reach remote communities and achieve universal access. Digital Public Infrastructure aims to strengthen Internet Exchange Points (IXPs) to keep data within Africa and reduce costs. Innovation and MSMEs support entrepreneurship, e-commerce, and job creation. Inclusive AI ensures Africa plays a significant role in fair, accountable, and responsible AI development.

The virtual consultation, running from 3 to 4 September 2025, includes sessions on the DTS background and survey results, demonstrations of the DTS data collection tool and monitoring dashboard, and discussions on postal sector transformation, IXPs, and last-mile connectivity solutions.

The process will continue with the Validation Meeting in Maseru, Lesotho, from 7 to 9 October 2025. During the meeting, participants will finalise the report and determine the next steps to accelerate Africa’s digital transformation.

This consultation represents a critical milestone in achieving Africa’s digital ambitions and ensuring equitable access, innovation, and technological growth across the continent.
