Minister Nthati Moorosi Approves Key Decisions for Improved Cities and National Development

The Minister of Information, Communications, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Nthati Moorosi, has presented several ministerial decisions approved during her two-week term. The decisions focus on improving urban management, public safety, agriculture, international cooperation, and education.
The Ministry of Local Government has been tasked with implementing a smart city project, beginning with Maseru. The initiative will equip cities with cameras to monitor traffic flow and improve urban management. The project is expected to enhance public services and reduce congestion.
Public safety and security remain a Cabinet priority. The Ministry of Justice and Legal Affairs will draft legislation to curb arms trafficking. This move aims to strengthen law enforcement and reduce illegal weapons circulation.
Cybersecurity has received new attention. The Ministry of Information will divide the existing cybercrime law into two separate laws. One will focus on preventing cybercrime, and the other will address broader cybersecurity measures.
The Ministry of Agriculture has been given multiple mandates. It will draft legislation for animal identification to prevent theft and develop a national poultry production policy to standardize poultry farming nationwide. These measures aim to strengthen the agricultural sector and protect farmers’ livelihoods.
In international affairs, the Minister of International Affairs will sign the SADC employment and service agreement. This agreement ensures transparent employment practices and protects workers. The Ministry will also share national statistics with SADC to support regional planning. Furthermore, the Minister will work to standardize higher education qualifications across African countries.
Education and training initiatives include a partnership with the United Arab Emirates. The UAE will train 300 young men, aged 21 to 40, in security. Those who complete the program will have opportunities to work at airports and other security sectors.
Finally, the Prime Minister is scheduled to visit Australia next week for a mining conference. The visit aims to strengthen international cooperation and explore investment opportunities in the mining sector.
These decisions signal a focused effort by the Cabinet to improve public safety, modernize cities, and enhance economic and educational opportunities. Implementation across sectors is expected to begin immediately, with Maseru serving as the pilot for the smart city initiative.
