Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Foundation Launch Raises More Than M1 Million for Lesotho’s Future

More than M1 million was raised at the official launch of the Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Trust and Foundation in Maseru on Thursday evening, marking a significant start for an initiative focused on youth development, cultural preservation and sustainable national development. The foundation was established by Princess Senate Mohato Seeiso with the aim of creating meaningful opportunities while protecting the heritage, identity and dignity of the Basotho nation. The strong financial support recorded during the launch demonstrated the willingness of individuals and supporters to invest in initiatives that seek to address some of Lesotho’s social and economic challenges. Funds were raised through individual pledges and donations made during the event. The launch therefore combined a celebration of Basotho heritage with a practical commitment to supporting communities and young people across the country.
Speaking at the event, His Majesty King Letsie III praised Princess Senate for taking the initiative to establish the foundation and commended her commitment to the project from a young age. The King noted that Princess Senate had pursued the initiative independently and approached him and the Queen for advice only when necessary. His remarks highlighted the importance of young people taking responsibility for projects that can contribute to the development of their communities and country. He also expressed the pride felt by the Royal Family, close relatives and friends in the young adult Princess Senate has become. The King’s support added significance to the launch while recognising the personal commitment that Princess Senate has demonstrated in bringing the foundation into existence.
Princess Senate explained that the Foundation was established as a platform for creating meaningful national impact after she returned from her studies in Canada. Her vision reflects an intention to apply her experiences and knowledge to initiatives that can address challenges facing communities in Lesotho. She also connected the establishment of the Foundation to the spirit and achievements of Lesotho’s bicentennial celebrations, which marked 200 years of the existence of the Basotho nation. That historic milestone provided an opportunity to reflect on the country’s heritage while considering what the next generation can contribute to its future. The Foundation seeks to carry that spirit forward by combining cultural identity with practical programmes designed to improve lives.
The Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Foundation has identified several areas as priorities, including youth development, cultural preservation, education, mental wellness and sustainable community development. These areas address different but closely connected aspects of national development and reflect the need for communities to have access to opportunities that support both personal and social progress. Youth development is particularly important because young people represent a large part of Lesotho’s future workforce and leadership. Education can provide the skills required to participate in the economy while cultural preservation can ensure that national identity remains strong as society changes. The focus on mental wellness and sustainable community development also recognises that meaningful development requires attention to the broader wellbeing of individuals and communities.
Princess Senate placed particular emphasis on investing in people, especially young people, because they are central to the future of Lesotho. Youth unemployment remains one of the country’s significant challenges, making initiatives that support skills development, entrepreneurship and community participation especially relevant. Young people need more than access to education alone, as they also require opportunities to gain practical experience, develop businesses and participate in projects that create income and social value. A foundation that focuses on these areas can potentially help young Basotho turn skills and ideas into sustainable opportunities. Continued investment in young people can also strengthen communities by creating individuals who are better prepared to contribute to Lesotho’s economic and social development.
Prime Minister Ntsokoane Matekane, who is also the founder of the SAM Matekane Foundation, welcomed the initiative while stressing the importance of transparency, accountability and dedication. His comments highlighted that raising substantial funds is only the beginning of establishing a sustainable foundation. Organisations that depend on public support need strong governance systems to ensure that financial resources are managed responsibly and directed towards their intended purposes. Clear reporting and accountability can also strengthen public confidence and encourage more people and institutions to support future programmes. By maintaining high standards of transparency, the Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Foundation can build a strong reputation and establish a sustainable platform for long-term community impact.
The Prime Minister also praised the Foundation for its potential contribution towards reducing youth unemployment, which continues to pose a major challenge for Lesotho. Unemployment among young people can have wide-ranging effects on households, communities and the national economy, particularly when skilled young people struggle to find opportunities to use their abilities. Programmes that combine education, skills development, entrepreneurship and community projects can help young people gain experience while creating pathways towards employment and self-employment. The Foundation’s focus on youth development could therefore complement broader national efforts to address unemployment. Its impact will depend on the scale, consistency and effectiveness of the programmes it introduces across different communities.
The more than M1 million raised at the launch provides the Foundation with an important starting point for implementing its objectives. Because the funds came from individual pledges and donations, the amount also reflects a level of confidence among supporters in the vision presented by Princess Senate. The effective use of these resources will be important in demonstrating how financial contributions can translate into measurable benefits for communities. Projects will need clear objectives, responsible financial management and mechanisms for tracking outcomes. If the Foundation can demonstrate that its resources are being used effectively, it could strengthen support for future fundraising and expand the reach of its programmes.
The connection between cultural preservation and development is another important element of the Foundation’s vision. Lesotho’s history and identity remain central to the national character, while changing social and economic conditions require new approaches to development. Preserving cultural heritage does not mean preventing change, but rather ensuring that national values, traditions and identity remain part of the country’s future. Initiatives that combine heritage with education, youth programmes and community development can give younger generations a stronger understanding of where they come from while preparing them to participate in modern society. The Foundation’s name and objectives reflect an effort to connect the legacy of the Basotho nation with the aspirations of its future generations.
The official launch of the Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Trust and Foundation therefore marks the beginning of what could become a significant platform for social and national development in Lesotho. More than M1 million in pledges and donations gives the initiative an encouraging financial foundation, but its long-term success will depend on how effectively those resources are managed and transformed into practical programmes. The support from King Letsie III, Princess Senate’s commitment and the Prime Minister’s emphasis on accountability have highlighted both the potential and the responsibility attached to the Foundation. By investing in young people, protecting Basotho heritage, supporting education, promoting mental wellness and encouraging sustainable community development, the Foundation has set out a broad national vision. If it maintains transparency, accountability and sustained commitment, the Shoeshoe ea Moshoeshoe Foundation can turn the momentum of its launch into lasting opportunities for communities and contribute meaningfully to the future of Lesotho.
