Lesotho Champions Digital Inclusion at LLDC3 Conference in Turkmenistan

Lesotho took a firm stand for digital equity during the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC3) held in Awaza, Turkmenistan. The country participated in the Connectivity Track under the theme “Digital Potential Beyond Boundaries.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Lejone Mpotjoana led the delegation and delivered a powerful address. He called for urgent reform of global financial systems to better serve the needs of landlocked nations like Lesotho. He outlined four key messages:
- Connectivity is a lifeline. It drives inclusive growth, innovation, and access to the global economy.
- Stronger South-South and triangular cooperation is needed to meet shared development goals.
- Digital and green technologies must reach youth and women to fuel real transformation.
- Climate finance promises must be fulfilled to ensure climate justice for all.
His remarks came as new data revealed the extent of digital exclusion. Only 26% of people in African landlocked countries have access to the internet. Women and rural communities are the most affected.
The LLDC3 Connectivity Track focused on practical steps to close these gaps. Discussions centred on:
- Expanding internet access and affordability
- Bridging the digital gender gap
- Promoting digital trade
- Empowering youth with digital skills
- Developing infrastructure for long-term resilience
Lesotho’s delegation included Mr. Lekhela, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Mr. Kanono Ramashamole, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation.
Mr. Ramashamole participated in a high-level panel, where he shared Lesotho’s progress in building a competitive digital economy. He outlined national strategies to support digital innovation, improve rural access, and train the next generation in technology skills.
Lesotho’s participation at LLDC3 highlighted its commitment to digital transformation. The government views connectivity as central to national development, inclusion, and long-term sustainability.
