Lesotho and IFRC Sign Historic Agreement to Boost Humanitarian Cooperation

In a groundbreaking step toward enhancing humanitarian collaboration, the Government of Lesotho has officially signed the Legal Status Agreement with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The landmark signing ceremony took place today in Maseru, with Hon. Limpho Tau, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, representing the Government of Lesotho, and Mr. Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the IFRC, signing on behalf of the organization.

This Agreement formally grants the IFRC legal recognition to operate in the Kingdom of Lesotho, opening the door to deeper, more structured cooperation in key areas such as disaster preparedness, health response, and long-term community resilience.

Speaking at the ceremony, Hon. Tau hailed the Agreement as a testament to Lesotho’s steadfast commitment to advancing humanitarian efforts and supporting life-saving partnerships. “This milestone demonstrates our determination to strengthen our national capacity in addressing emergencies and empowering vulnerable communities through effective collaboration,” he said.

Mr. Chapagain echoed the sentiment, reaffirming IFRC’s dedication to standing with Lesotho in times of crisis and beyond. “Through this Agreement, we will intensify our technical and financial support, working hand-in-hand with the Lesotho Red Cross Society to deliver meaningful impact where it matters most,” he stated.

The Legal Status Agreement is expected to streamline IFRC’s operations within the country, ensuring faster response times during disasters, greater alignment with national development goals, and improved access to vulnerable populations.

This pivotal moment marks the beginning of a new era of coordinated humanitarian action in Lesotho, underscoring the shared values of solidarity, service, and community empowerment.

With growing global challenges such as climate change, health emergencies, and economic instability, the partnership between Lesotho and the IFRC is set to play a critical role in building a safer and more resilient future for all Basotho.
