Lesotho Strengthens Humanitarian Ties as IFRC Secretary General Visits Maseru

In a landmark diplomatic engagement, the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Relations a.i., Hon. Matjato Moteane, officially welcomed Mr. Jagan Chapagain, Secretary General of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), during his official visit to Lesotho today.
This high-level meeting marks a pivotal moment in the strengthening of humanitarian cooperation between the Kingdom of Lesotho and the IFRC. At the heart of the visit is the signing of the Legal Status Agreement — a key step in formalizing the IFRC’s operational presence in the country and enhancing its capacity to support local initiatives.
Hon. Moteane commended both the IFRC and the Lesotho Red Cross Society for their ongoing contributions to disaster relief, public health, and community resilience. “Their work has been instrumental in safeguarding lives and livelihoods, particularly during critical times such as the COVID-19 pandemic and recurring droughts,” he stated.
He expressed deep gratitude for the organizations’ tireless efforts and unwavering support during national emergencies, emphasizing the importance of partnership in strengthening Lesotho’s preparedness and response frameworks.
Mr. Chapagain’s visit is not only a gesture of solidarity but also a reaffirmation of shared values in humanitarian service. It underscores the commitment of both the Government of Lesotho and the IFRC to advancing life-saving programs and building resilient communities across the country.
With the Legal Status Agreement now in focus, this visit is expected to usher in a new era of closer collaboration, increased humanitarian impact, and more structured support for Lesotho’s most vulnerable populations.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that this milestone will serve as a foundation for future initiatives aimed at improving disaster risk management, health systems, and community development.
