Young Lesotho Economist, Motena Sefora Rangoanana Is Turning Dirt Into Gold

Meet Motena Sefora Rangoanana, Lesotho’s eighth representative in the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders — and a rising force in sustainable agriculture and economic transformation.

From the sun-soaked fields of Mafeteng to the cutting-edge classrooms of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, Motena is proving that the future of farming isn’t just green — it’s smart, climate-resilient, and powered by bold African women.

While others talk about food insecurity and climate change, Motena gets her hands dirty — quite literally. As an economist and sustainable agriculture expert, she’s on a mission to revolutionize farming in Lesotho by introducing game-changing practices like:

  • Hydroponics (farming without soil),
  • Regenerative agriculture (restoring the land while farming it),
  • And climate-smart techniques that protect crops and livelihoods in an era of environmental instability.

“Lesotho’s farmers are resilient. They just need tools, training, and trust,” Motena says.

Motena’s approach is part science, part strategy, and 100% heart.

She’s trained local farmers, helped unlock microfinance opportunities, and developed easy-to-use toolkits for land restoration — bridging the gap between advanced agricultural methods and the daily realities of small-scale and subsistence farmers.

She’s especially passionate about climate finance, having consulted on projects that link farming with climate adaptation — because she knows money follows data, and impact follows access.

Motena’s leadership style? Collaborative. Informed. Grounded.

She doesn’t sit in offices writing theories — she walks the fieldslistens to farmers, and co-creates solutions with the very people she’s working to uplift. That’s what makes her vision not just powerful — but possible.

And now, with her selection into the Mandela Washington Fellowship, she’s leveling up.

For six weeks, Motena will study Leadership in Civic Engagement at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, deepening her skills in policy, advocacy, and systems change. She’s ready to scale her impactshape smarter agricultural policies, and champion food systems that work for every Mosotho farmer.

Motena Sefora Rangoanana is more than an expert — she’s a movement. One that believes:

  • Farmers deserve dignity.
  • Green jobs are the future.
  • And climate action must start at the grassroots.

In a world searching for sustainable solutions, Lesotho has already found one — and her name is Motena.

Follow her journey, celebrate her impact, and support her cause — because she’s not just growing crops.

She’s growing hope.
