Lesotho Red Cross Society Trains Volunteers Ahead of King’s Birthday Celebrations

In preparation for the upcoming King’s Birthday celebration, the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) in Berea Division has launched a weeklong First Aid training programme targeting at least 15 local volunteers. The initiative is aimed at strengthening community readiness and improving emergency response capacity during the national event and beyond.

The development was confirmed by Mr. Ts’okoliso Mothibeli, the Senior Branch Development Officer for LRCS Berea Division, during an interview on Tuesday. He emphasized the urgent need for increased first aid knowledge in light of the rising number of emergency incidents occurring across the country.

“Lesotho is currently facing various emergency situations, some of which have resulted in the loss of lives,” said Mr. Mothibeli. “The goal of this training is to equip volunteers with essential first aid skills that will enable them to provide immediate and effective help, particularly in situations where professional medical support may not be readily available.”

The weeklong course includes both theoretical and hands-on practical sessions, ensuring that volunteers can confidently perform emergency procedures such as CPR, wound management, and stabilizing patients until they can receive advanced care.

Mr. Mothibeli also revealed that LRCS has identified several high-risk areas—referred to as “hot spots”—where emergencies are more likely to occur. As part of the programme, trained volunteers will be expected to conduct outreach efforts in these communities, sharing first aid techniques and raising awareness on how locals can effectively respond to incidents while awaiting professional medical assistance.

With the King’s Birthday celebration expected to draw large crowds and national attention, LRCS’s proactive approach underscores the importance of community-level health and safety preparedness. The training not only ensures safer festivities but also leaves a lasting impact by enhancing the emergency response capabilities within the Berea Division.

This initiative stands as a testament to the Lesotho Red Cross Society’s commitment to saving lives and building resilient communities—well beyond the scope of a single event.
