A Historic Week for Lesotho in Japan: A Vision of Shared Prosperity and Innovation

From 29 June to 4 July 2025, Lesotho marked a significant milestone in its global diplomacy with a state visit to Japan led by Their Majesties King Letsie III and Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso. Accompanied by Honourable Ministers and senior officials, the delegation embarked on a mission to strengthen ties, promote sustainable development, and showcase the Kingdom’s cultural and economic potential.

29 June 2025 – A Royal Welcome in Osaka
The visit began with a warm reception in Osaka, where Their Majesties were welcomed by His Excellency Retšelisitsoe Theko, Lesotho’s Ambassador to Japan, and His Excellency Fumio Shimizu, Japan’s Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa. This ceremonial arrival set the tone for a week of high-level engagements and diplomatic progress.

30 June 2025 – Lesotho Shines at World Expo 2025
Their Majesties toured the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, visiting key pavilions such as the Health Pavilion and the Pasona Pavilion. A proud moment for the delegation was the stop at the Lesotho Pavilion, where the Kingdom’s innovations and aspirations were displayed on a world stage. The visit showcased Lesotho’s commitment to global partnerships and sustainable progress.

1 July 2025 – Business Forum and Cultural Showcase
On this day, King Letsie III led the Lesotho Business Forum, inviting international investors and partners to support the country’s vision for inclusive economic growth. Later, the delegation celebrated Lesotho National Day at the Expo, where audiences were treated to vibrant cultural performances by young Basotho artists. The celebration was a powerful expression of national identity and talent.

3 July 2025 – Energy Transition Symposium in Tokyo
Their Majesties travelled to Tokyo for a high-level symposium co-hosted with Professor Tshilidzi Marwala at the United Nations University. The focus of the event was Lesotho’s Just Energy Transition (JET) Fund—His Majesty’s flagship initiative aimed at transforming the country’s energy landscape. Discussions centered on how Lesotho can leverage its natural resources to create a clean, resilient energy future.

4 July 2025 – Strengthening Bilateral Ties
The final day of the visit featured crucial bilateral meetings with leading Japanese agencies: JICA, JETRO, Keidanren, and JBIC. These discussions opened new pathways for cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment, and development. The engagements reinforced Lesotho’s commitment to strategic diplomacy and long-term global partnerships.

This state visit marks a defining moment in Lesotho’s diplomatic journey.
