Lesotho Scientist, Nthabeleng Hlapisi Is on a Mission to Cure Cancer With Local Plants — And the World Is Taking Notice

Meet Nthabeleng Hlapisi, a name that’s quickly becoming synonymous with groundbreaking science and unstoppable ambition in Africa. Recently selected as Lesotho’s ninth fellow for the prestigious 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship, Nthabeleng is proving that the future of global healthcare might just grow from the soil of her homeland.

Nthabeleng is not your average PhD candidate. She’s an emerging leader in medicinal chemistry and public health, driven by one big goal: to find affordable, plant-based treatments for cancer — a disease that’s devastating families across Africa and the world.

Her research dives deep into Lesotho’s indigenous flora, hunting for powerful compounds that could become tomorrow’s life-saving therapies. For her, this isn’t just science — it’s personal, purposeful, and revolutionary.

Africa has long been overlooked in global health innovation. Cancer rates are rising, yet treatments remain expensive, imported, and out of reach for many. Nthabeleng wants to flip that script.

“We need healthcare solutions that speak our language, grow in our soil, and heal our people,” she says.

With her sharp analytical skills and unwavering commitment to evidence-based science, Nthabeleng is bridging the gap between academic research, policy reform, and frontline healthcare. She’s not just chasing a cure — she’s reimagining the way it’s discovered, delivered, and distributed in Africa.

Nthabeleng dreams of building Lesotho’s first dedicated cancer research laboratory — a hub for locally-driven studies that inform national policies on prevention, early diagnosis, and treatment. She wants every child, woman, and man in Lesotho to have access to timely, effective, and culturally grounded cancer care.

And she’s not going it alone.

As part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship, she’ll spend six weeks at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, sharpening her leadership skills in the Public Management track. After that, she’ll embark on a Professional Development Experience — expanding her network, refining her research, and turning her vision into actionable impact.

Nthabeleng’s story is more than inspiring — it’s a call to action for young Africans, especially women, in STEM fields. She proves that local problems require local solutions — and that world-class innovation can come from anywhere, including the mountains of Lesotho.

Her journey is just beginning, but the seeds she’s planting today could heal generations tomorrow.

Lesotho, take pride. Africa, take note. The world, pay attention.

Nthabeleng Hlapisi is leading a new wave of science — rooted in culture, powered by purpose, and destined for greatness.
