Minister of Trade to Launch New Clothing Factory in Maputsoe to Tackle Unemployment

In a bid to combat rising unemployment in Lesotho, the Minister of Trade, Industry and Business Development, Mr. Mokhethi Shelile, is set to officiate the grand opening of a new clothing factory in Maputsoe this Friday. The event marks a significant step in the government’s ongoing efforts to boost industrial growth and job creation in the country.

Lesotho National Development Corporation (LNDC) Corporate Communication Manager, Ms. Tiisetso Moremoholo, confirmed that the new factory—JEE Clothing (PTY) Ltd—will be operational under the leadership of its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ms. Elma Wallies.

Ms. Moremoholo shared that JEE Clothing was established in September 2008 and legally registered the same year. The company specialises in manufacturing industrial workwear and primarily serves the South African mining sector under its well-known brand, Sahara Workwear.

The launch of the Maputsoe factory is expected to provide employment opportunities to hundreds of Basotho, particularly in the textile and garment sector, which has long been one of Lesotho’s key economic drivers. The move also aligns with the government’s broader industrialisation strategy aimed at diversifying the economy and fostering inclusive economic growth.

JEE Clothing’s decision to expand operations in Lesotho signals growing investor confidence and reflects the country’s potential as a hub for quality manufacturing. The company brings not only employment prospects but also skills development and industrial exposure for local workers.

The factory opening is seen as a timely intervention in the fight against poverty and joblessness, with the Ministry of Trade highlighting its commitment to supporting businesses that create sustainable livelihoods for Basotho citizens. As anticipation builds ahead of Friday’s ceremony, the community of Maputsoe is hopeful that this new facility will spark further industrial growth and economic activity in the region.
