Minister Nthati Moorosi Announces Appointment of Acting DPP Amid Ongoing Legal Controversy

Minister of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ms. Nthati Moorosi, has emerged at the centre of a major national development following her announcement of Advocate Lehlanako Mofelikoane’s appointment as the Acting Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), effective from June 30, 2025.
Speaking during a Cabinet decisions briefing broadcast on Lesotho National Broadcasting Services, Ms. Moorosi confirmed that the appointment comes in the wake of the suspension of the sitting DPP, Advocate Hlalefang Motinyane. The Minister’s announcement marks a significant shift in the country’s legal leadership and has prompted renewed discussions about transparency, governance, and judicial independence.
Ms. Moorosi emphasised that the Cabinet had acted in the interest of maintaining the integrity of the Office of the DPP during a sensitive period. “The appointment of Advocate Mofelikoane is aimed at ensuring stability and continued delivery of justice while necessary processes are undertaken,” she stated.
Details surrounding the suspension of Advocate Motinyane were not disclosed during the briefing, but the Agency has previously reported that a letter from the Prime Minister cited multiple concerns, including failure to issue prosecution directives as required by Section 99 of the Constitution. The matter has since sparked legal debate, with the Law Society of Lesotho issuing a statement condemning the suspension, calling it a threat to constitutional order and judicial independence.
Minister Moorosi’s remarks came at a time when public scrutiny is intensifying around key government decisions, particularly those involving institutions of justice. Despite the backlash from legal circles, she reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding constitutional processes and ensuring that the Office of the DPP remains functional and credible.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is a pivotal institution within Lesotho’s justice system, tasked with prosecuting criminal cases on behalf of the King in the Subordinate Courts, High Court, and Court of Appeal.
With her firm and composed delivery, Minister Moorosi has positioned herself as a key voice in the unfolding legal shake-up. As the situation develops, her role in communicating and shaping public understanding of the Cabinet’s decisions continues to draw national attention.
