Government Secretary Condemns Leak of Lesotho Missions Abroad List, Launches Investigation

The Office of the Government Secretary (GS) has confirmed that it will initiate investigations into the recent leak of a classified document listing Lesotho’s Missions Abroad, which is currently circulating widely on social media platforms.
Speaking in an interview, the Government Secretary, Mrs. Teboho ‘Malisebo Mokela, expressed concern and disappointment over the breach, especially given the sensitive nature of the leaked document. At the time of the interview, Mrs. Mokela had not yet seen the trending list but was made aware of the situation by the media.
“This is very unfortunate. Civil servants have a duty to protect government information, especially that which is clearly marked ‘SECRET’. They took an oath to uphold confidentiality,” Mrs. Mokela stated.
She further noted that the matter has been escalated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Relations—the department responsible for overseeing diplomatic postings and foreign missions. The GS emphasized that firm action is expected to be taken, including disciplinary measures against the individual or individuals behind the leak.
According to emerging reports, the leaked list details appointments ranging from Minister Counsellors to administrative staff and drivers across Lesotho’s diplomatic missions worldwide. The circulation of such internal information on public platforms has sparked widespread debate and raised concerns over the security of confidential state documents.
Mrs. Mokela reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding professionalism and accountability within the public service. She warned that breaches of this nature undermine trust in public institutions and called on civil servants to act with integrity.
“The government will not tolerate such behaviour. Leaking sensitive information puts the country’s diplomatic integrity at risk and undermines our governance structures,” she added.
As the investigation unfolds, the Office of the Government Secretary assures the public that steps are being taken to strengthen information security and uphold the highest standards of confidentiality in state affairs.
