Lesotho Officially Launches Voluntary National Review Report on Sustainable Development Goals

Lesotho has officially launched its Voluntary National Review (VNR) report, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commitment to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The high-level event brought together government officials, development partners, civil society organisations, and members of the diplomatic corps to reflect on the nation’s progress, challenges, and opportunities in advancing sustainable development.

The VNR report provides a comprehensive overview of Lesotho’s performance in six critical SDGs: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 14 (Life Below Water), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

Government representatives at the event emphasized the importance of inclusive and data-driven reporting as a foundation for policy-making. The review process allowed Lesotho to assess its achievements, identify existing gaps, and reaffirm its commitment to creating a more equitable, resilient, and sustainable future.

On SDG 3, the report highlighted strides made in expanding access to healthcare services, especially maternal and child health, while also pointing out ongoing challenges in tackling non-communicable diseases and strengthening healthcare infrastructure.

Under SDG 5, Lesotho reported increased representation of women in decision-making positions and ongoing legal reforms aimed at promoting gender equality. However, the report acknowledged persistent issues such as gender-based violence and limited economic opportunities for women in rural areas.

For SDG 8, the focus was on boosting job creation and supporting entrepreneurship, especially among youth and women. The government noted that while progress has been made, high unemployment rates continue to pose a major challenge to inclusive economic growth.

Regarding SDG 13, the report showcased Lesotho’s climate adaptation strategies, including community-based programs aimed at enhancing climate resilience. Yet, the country remains vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, particularly in agriculture and water security.

On SDG 14, the VNR noted the country’s participation in regional efforts to protect aquatic ecosystems, especially those linked to transboundary water resources such as the Orange-Senqu River basin.

SDG 17 emphasized the importance of partnerships in achieving all other goals. Lesotho highlighted successful collaborations with international donors, private sector actors, and civil society, while calling for strengthened coordination and increased financing to accelerate progress.

The launch of the VNR report signals Lesotho’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and inclusive development. It also provides a platform for global dialogue and peer learning as the country prepares to present its report at the upcoming United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
