Lesotho Launches Voluntary National Review Report Ahead of 2030 SDG Deadline

The Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, under the leadership of Dr. Retsilisitsoe Matlanyane, officially launched Lesotho’s 2025 Voluntary National Review (VNR) report during a media briefing held in Maseru on Thursday. The report provides a critical reflection on the country’s progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and outlines the nation’s development partnership with the United Nations (UN).
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Matlanyane highlighted that the report marks an opportunity for Lesotho to assess its development journey in collaboration with the UN, especially at a time when the UN-Lesotho partnership enters its eighth year. She noted that the VNR serves as a vital tool for self-evaluation, guiding the country on what has been achieved so far and what areas still require action.
“This year marks five years to the 2030 deadline for the SDGs. It is a crucial period for review, introspection, and recalibration,” said Dr. Matlanyane. “It’s a time to take stock of the progress we’ve made and the gaps we need to address.”
The Finance Minister also pointed out that the global landscape has become increasingly complex. She cited the ongoing challenges posed by geopolitical tensions, economic instability, climate change, and rapid technological advancements, all of which impact Lesotho’s path toward sustainable development.
The launch event drew participation from several high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Gender, Youth, Sports, Arts, Culture and Social Development, Mr. Pitso Lesaoana, and the Minister of Communications, Science and Technology, Ms. Nthati Moorosi. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to a multi-sectoral approach in achieving the SDGs.
Lesotho’s 2025 VNR report contributes to the global review process of the 2030 Agenda, showcasing how countries are striving to meet the 17 interlinked goals. It also offers insights into national strategies, policy shifts, and the challenges unique to the Kingdom.
As the countdown to 2030 continues, Lesotho’s renewed focus on inclusive and sustainable development is expected to shape not only national policy but also strengthen its voice within the international community.
