Lesotho Government Takes Strong Measures to Prevent Foot and Mouth Disease Amid Outbreak in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

The Government of Lesotho, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, has announced proactive steps to prevent the spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD) within the country. This comes in response to recent reports of the highly contagious disease in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Minister of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition, Mr. Thabo Mofosi, addressed the situation in a formal statement, emphasizing the government’s commitment to safeguarding the nation’s livestock industry. “Although foot and mouth disease has not yet been reported in Lesotho, we recognize the significant risk posed by its proximity to affected regions,” said Mr. Mofosi.
FMD is known for its rapid spread among cloven-hoofed animals, and its impact can be devastating to local economies that depend heavily on livestock farming. In Lesotho, sectors such as wool and mohair production are particularly vulnerable, both in domestic markets and in international trade.
“The infectious nature of this disease means we must act swiftly to protect our farmers and the entire agricultural value chain,” the Minister added. He assured the public that the Ministry is implementing rigorous monitoring and prevention strategies, including heightened surveillance at border points, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with regional partners.
The government’s approach aligns with international animal health standards to contain any potential outbreaks and mitigate economic losses. By strengthening biosecurity measures and encouraging livestock owners to report unusual symptoms promptly, Lesotho aims to maintain its status as a disease-free zone.
This proactive stance reflects the Ministry’s dedication to food security and the sustainability of Lesotho’s agricultural sector. The ongoing vigilance and cooperation between government bodies, farmers, and neighboring countries will be crucial in preventing the incursion of foot and mouth disease and protecting livelihoods.
As the situation evolves, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition urges all stakeholders to stay informed and adhere to recommended safety protocols to safeguard the nation’s livestock health.
