Lesotho Hands Over Smart Border Equipment to Boost Trade Efficiency with South Africa

In a significant step towards enhancing cross-border trade and regional integration, the Kingdom of Lesotho has officially handed over smart one-stop border post equipment to various government departments and private sector agencies. The move follows the signing of a Joint Action Plan in June between Lesotho and the Republic of South Africa, aimed at facilitating the smooth movement of people and goods between the two nations.
The handover, conducted on Friday under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Business Development, was implemented through the Competitiveness and Financial Inclusion (CAFI) project. It is part of a broader commitment to modernise border operations and strengthen Lesotho’s position in the regional trade landscape.
Speaking during the event, the Principal Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Palesa Matobako, described the occasion as a landmark moment in the country’s journey toward trade reform. “This handover stands as a powerful testament to our collective strides toward realising the Lesotho National Single Window,” she said. “It is a pivotal reform that embodies our ministry’s dedication to simplifying cross-border procedures and enhancing Lesotho’s global competitiveness.”
The smart border post equipment is expected to play a critical role in the operationalisation of the Lesotho National Single Window—a digital platform designed to streamline and harmonise border clearance processes across multiple agencies. Once fully functional, it will reduce bureaucratic delays, lower the cost of doing business, and improve transparency at the borders.
Officials noted that the equipment will be deployed at key entry points and will support customs, immigration, and other trade-related agencies in processing documentation more efficiently. Private sector representatives also welcomed the development, highlighting its potential to reduce turnaround times and improve the ease of doing business in Lesotho.
The initiative aligns with regional goals outlined in the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and supports broader integration efforts within the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
As the government moves forward with the implementation of the Lesotho National Single Window, stakeholders are optimistic that the new technology and improved coordination will significantly boost trade volumes and support economic growth.
With the backing of the CAFI project and strong political will, Lesotho continues to take decisive steps toward modern, efficient, and inclusive border management that benefits both traders and citizens.
