Lesotho and UNFPA Strengthen Collaboration on Development Priorities

The Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, held a high-level meeting with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) Country Representative in Lesotho, Mr. John Mosoti, to reinforce cooperation on key national development priorities.

The meeting reviewed ongoing partnerships between the Government of Lesotho and UNFPA, with a strong focus on preparations for the 2026 Population and Housing Census. The census is expected to provide critical data for evidence-based planning, resource allocation, and policy development.

Mr. Mosoti highlighted that discussions extended beyond census preparations to include thematic areas where UNFPA is actively engaged in Lesotho. One of these is the Demographic Dividend Strategy, which aims to harness the potential of Lesotho’s youthful population to drive economic growth and development.

The meeting also addressed Menstrual Health Management, a crucial issue for advancing the empowerment of women and girls. Ensuring access to menstrual health products and education was noted as a step toward promoting gender equality and enabling full participation of women in education and the workforce.

Another focus area was the Investment Case for Maternal and Neonatal Health, with both parties stressing the need for increased investment to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates. Family planning, the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV), and efforts to eradicate child marriage were underscored as ongoing priorities requiring consistent commitment and coordinated action.

Dr. Matlanyane welcomed UNFPA’s continued support, noting that strong partnerships with development agencies are essential to achieving Lesotho’s national goals. The meeting reinforced the shared commitment of both the government and UNFPA to advancing health, gender equality, and sustainable development in the country.

The outcomes of the discussions are expected to guide future cooperation frameworks and ensure that development programs respond effectively to the needs of Basotho communities.
