Lesotho Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Development at 2026 United Nations High Level Political Forum

Lesotho has renewed its commitment to achieving sustainable development goals at the 2026 High Level Political Forum (HLPF) held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States of America. The opening of the High Level Segment on Monday, 13 July, provided an important platform for countries to review progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and discuss actions needed to accelerate the 2030 Agenda. Lesotho used the international forum to highlight its continued efforts in advancing sustainable development and strengthening cooperation with global partners. The country’s participation demonstrated its commitment to addressing development challenges through coordinated policies, strategic planning and international collaboration. The forum also provided an opportunity for Lesotho to share its experiences and reaffirm its dedication to building a more sustainable and inclusive future.

Following the official opening of the High Level Segment, the Head of Delegation delivered Lesotho’s National Statement during the General Debate. The statement reaffirmed the country’s commitment to advancing sustainable development, with a particular focus on accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. Lesotho emphasised the importance of continued action and partnerships to ensure that progress towards the SDGs remains on track. The National Statement reflected the country’s recognition that achieving sustainable development requires strong institutions, effective policies and cooperation between governments and international organisations. Through its participation, Lesotho highlighted its determination to contribute meaningfully to global efforts aimed at improving social, economic and environmental outcomes.

The Lesotho delegation was led by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning and included the Honourable Minister of Natural Resources, Honourable Mohlomi Moleko. Their participation reflected the importance of aligning national development planning with sustainable development priorities. The presence of senior government officials demonstrated Lesotho’s commitment to ensuring that discussions at international platforms translate into practical national action. The delegation represented key sectors involved in implementing policies related to economic growth, natural resource management and sustainable development. Their involvement also strengthened Lesotho’s engagement with international partners working towards achieving the SDGs.

During the forum, the Head of Delegation also participated in a Stocktaking Session on the implementation of the Pact for the Future. The session provided an opportunity to discuss progress made by countries in fulfilling commitments related to global cooperation and sustainable development. Lesotho highlighted government efforts in implementing SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17, which focus on clean water and sanitation, affordable and clean energy, industry and infrastructure, sustainable cities and communities and partnerships for the goals. These areas represent important priorities for Lesotho as the country works to improve infrastructure, expand access to essential services and strengthen economic development. The discussions demonstrated the link between national development strategies and international commitments.

Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on clean water and sanitation, remains a key area of importance for Lesotho due to the country’s significant water resources and the need to ensure equitable access to safe water. Through improved water management and infrastructure development, Lesotho continues to work towards strengthening water security for communities. SDG 7, which promotes affordable and clean energy, is also critical as the country seeks to expand access to reliable energy and support sustainable energy solutions. Progress in these areas contributes directly to improving living standards, supporting economic activity and protecting the environment. Lesotho’s engagement at the HLPF highlighted the importance of these sectors in achieving long term development goals.

The country also highlighted progress related to SDG 9, which focuses on industry, innovation and infrastructure, as well as SDG 11, which promotes sustainable cities and communities. Developing strong infrastructure and encouraging innovation are essential for creating economic opportunities and improving public services. Sustainable urban planning is becoming increasingly important as communities grow and require better housing, transport systems and social services. Lesotho’s efforts in these areas reflect its broader goal of creating resilient communities that can adapt to economic, social and environmental changes. By sharing these initiatives at the United Nations, the country demonstrated its willingness to contribute to global discussions on sustainable development solutions.

SDG 17, which focuses on partnerships for achieving the goals, was another important area highlighted during Lesotho’s participation. The country recognised that international cooperation, regional partnerships and collaboration between government, private sector and development organisations are essential for achieving meaningful progress. Sustainable development requires shared responsibility and collective action, particularly for countries working to overcome resource and capacity challenges. Lesotho’s engagement with international partners continues to support efforts in areas such as infrastructure development, climate action and economic transformation. The HLPF provided a valuable platform for strengthening these relationships and identifying new opportunities for cooperation.

The Lesotho delegation included several senior officials who contributed their expertise and supported the country’s participation at the global forum. Among the delegates were Mr Lira Ralebese, Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources, His Excellency Matete ‘Nena, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations, and Mr Lebohang Maseru, Commissioner of Water. The delegation also included Mrs Mamojaki Ramothamo, Counsellor Political, Mr Matooane Letsoela, Counsellor Economic, Mrs Marethabile Rapapa, First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Lesotho to the United Nations and Senior Economic Planner Ms Limakatso Matekane from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning. Their combined knowledge and experience supported Lesotho’s engagement on critical development issues. The participation of officials from different sectors reflected the interconnected nature of sustainable development.
