Lesotho Cabinet Approves Membership in Smart Africa Alliance and Updates on Key Government Initiatives

The Minister of Information, Communications, Science and Technology and Innovation has reported that the Cabinet has approved Lesotho’s application to join the Smart Africa Alliance. The alliance is a network of African countries focused on improving internet connectivity, sharing technical expertise, and pooling resources to strengthen national networks. The Minister noted, “I am very proud to announce that the cabinet has approved the application that was submitted by the Minister of International Affairs.” She also explained that the Ministry of Information, Communications, Science and Technology and Innovation will oversee the implementation and development of initiatives related to the organization.
In addition, the Cabinet addressed several legislative and policy updates. The draft law on value-added tax (VAT) has been amended and approved for passage in Parliament. The Income Tax Amendment Bill was also presented, and the Minister confirmed that the law will undergo revisions to align with current economic priorities.
Lesotho has received $2.7 million USD from the African Risk Capacity Insurance. The funds will be used to strengthen national preparedness for climate-related disasters. This financial support comes as part of the country’s broader strategy to improve disaster management and climate resilience.
The Cabinet announced that His Excellency the Head of State will lead a delegation to Italy for the World Food Forum. Letsie la Bora, serving as Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition, will deliver the keynote address. The forum coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization, which will feature an exhibition and museum.
Lesotho is preparing for its 59th Independence Day on October 4. The celebrations will include the unveiling of the DIAMOND JUBILEE LOGO in preparation for the 60th anniversary next year. Activities will feature tree planting events in Butha-Buthe, Thaba-Bosiu, and Qacha’s Nek, with specific dates to be announced.
The Cabinet also discussed ongoing international engagements, including Prime Minister Samuel Ntsokoane Matekane’s participation in the United Nations General Assembly in the United States. The Council of Ministers decided that the Lesotho Communications Authority (LCA) will monitor online crime and submit regular reports.
Lesotho will host the main meeting of the Commonwealth Communications Council in April next year. This will be the first time the country has hosted a meeting of this level, signaling Lesotho’s growing role in regional and international communications initiatives.
These decisions reflect the government’s focus on strengthening technology, improving disaster preparedness, and enhancing international collaboration while marking important national milestones.
