Metropolitan Lesotho Adopts Qacha’s Nek to Boost Tourism Through Youth-Led Storytelling

Metropolitan Lesotho has officially adopted the district of Qacha’s Nek under the national tourism initiative “Re Bontše Lesotho,” led by the Lesotho Tourism Development Corporation (LTDC). The initiative aims to highlight Lesotho’s scenic landscapes, cultural heritage, and untold district-level stories by empowering young Basotho to share authentic narratives through digital media. The adoption agreement was signed at the Manthabiseng Convention Centre in Maseru, marking a milestone in the campaign’s “Adopt a District” programme. This programme encourages corporate organisations to support youth content creators in showcasing their districts, providing both mentorship and resources to amplify local tourism. By combining private sector investment with creative youth engagement, the initiative seeks to position Lesotho’s districts as appealing destinations for both domestic and international visitors.

Rethabile Motsoahae, Managing Director of Metropolitan Lesotho, emphasized that adopting Qacha’s Nek aligns with the company’s brand promise of “Rea aha le ho sireletsa litoro tsa Basotho,” meaning building and protecting the dreams of Basotho. He highlighted that Lesotho possesses extraordinary natural beauty and a rich cultural heritage that deserves wider recognition. By investing in Qacha’s Nek, Metropolitan Lesotho aims to celebrate the district’s unique features while providing young people with opportunities to develop creative and digital skills. Motsoahae stressed that the initiative goes beyond financial services, focusing on community upliftment, youth empowerment, and long-term social impact. The adoption creates pathways for youth to become storytellers of their own districts, turning local knowledge and culture into valuable content for tourism promotion.

The campaign positions young Basotho as ambassadors for their districts, giving them platforms to share stories via social media, digital photography, and video content. Through this engagement, participants gain skills in digital marketing, content creation, and storytelling that can support future livelihoods. LTDC’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Phomolo Lebotsa, explained that tourism is a strategic tool in Lesotho’s fight against poverty, but its potential can only be realized through collaboration with the private sector and youth. Lebotsa noted that leveraging social media and digital platforms allows districts to reach wider audiences, increasing visibility for local attractions, cultural experiences, and natural landmarks. This approach also fosters a sense of ownership and pride among young people as they actively contribute to the development of their communities.

Malichaba Koetlisi of LTDC highlighted that the campaign draws inspiration from successful African travel influencers such as Ghanaian Wodemaya, who have rebranded destinations through online storytelling. A key feature of the initiative is a competition for aspiring travel influencers to submit content promoting their districts, encouraging creativity and innovation. Corporate partners like Metropolitan Lesotho play a crucial role by providing mentorship, funding, and promotional support to ensure the success of the youth-driven content. The collaboration between the private sector, government, and young content creators strengthens Lesotho’s cultural and tourism narrative while fostering sustainable economic opportunities.

The official launch of the campaign brings together content creators, tourism stakeholders, and corporate partners to celebrate Qacha’s Nek and the wider “Re Bontše Lesotho” programme. The event underscores the importance of youth-led storytelling in promoting Lesotho’s districts as vibrant, culturally rich, and tourism-friendly destinations. By empowering young Basotho to create and share authentic digital content, the campaign builds skills, generates opportunities, and enhances the country’s tourism profile. Metropolitan Lesotho’s adoption of Qacha’s Nek represents a strategic partnership that supports both community development and national tourism growth. Through initiatives like this, Lesotho continues to harness local creativity and digital innovation to share its beauty with the world.
