Department of Road Safety Intensifies Campaigns to Curb Rising Road Accidents

With a noticeable surge in road accidents across the country in recent months, the Department of Road Safety has announced plans to step up its campaigns to reduce incidents and save lives.

Road Safety Officer Mr. Setsoto Putsoa highlighted the department’s commitment to increasing its visibility on the roads both during the day and at night. He explained that the presence of officers on major highways and urban streets will help ensure that all road users strictly follow traffic regulations. Mr. Putsoa stated that the department’s aim is not only to enforce the law but also to educate and remind motorists and pedestrians about the importance of adhering to road safety rules.

He outlined several key areas that will be prioritized as part of the intensified campaign. These include conducting random inspections to ensure that vehicles are roadworthy and mechanically sound, enforcing speed limits with immediate penalties for those who exceed them, and increasing roadblocks to target drivers operating under the influence of alcohol. The department also plans to monitor general compliance with road regulations, encouraging drivers to wear seatbelts, obey traffic signals, and avoid distractions such as mobile phones while driving.

Mr. Putsoa stressed that road safety is a shared responsibility and urged all motorists to remain cautious and alert at all times. He emphasized that anything can happen on the road at any moment, and being proactive is essential to avoid accidents. The Department of Road Safety is also collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders in the transport sector to strengthen enforcement measures and raise awareness through public education campaigns. With these efforts, the department hopes to see a significant reduction in road accidents and promote a culture of responsible driving across the country.
