Heartbreak for Basotho as Lesotho U-17 Team Exits COSAFA After Heavy Loss to Zimbabwe

Yesterday marked a painful moment for Basotho football fans as Lesotho’s national under-17 team was eliminated from the COSAFA U-17 Championship following a crushing 12–2 defeat by Zimbabwe. The unexpected loss abruptly ended Lesotho’s promising journey in the regional tournament.

The young Likuena had entered the match with confidence, having opened their campaign with a hard-fought 1–0 victory against Botswana on Sunday. Hopes were high that the team could progress to the semi-finals, especially considering Botswana had previously stunned Zimbabwe with a 3–0 win. Lesotho needed only a draw or a win to secure advancement.

However, Zimbabwe proved too strong on the day, delivering a dominant performance that overwhelmed Lesotho from the first whistle. Despite moments of resilience, the defensive lapses and Zimbabwe’s attacking power proved decisive, leaving Lesotho unable to contain the onslaught.

The defeat not only ended Lesotho’s run in the tournament but also served as a sobering reminder of the challenges the team still faces in competing at high regional levels. Coaches and football officials acknowledged that while the loss was difficult, it also presented an opportunity to reflect, rebuild, and better prepare for future tournaments.

Supporters have expressed disappointment but also pride in the team’s effort and the early promise shown in their opening match. Many believe that with continued investment in youth development and exposure to international competition, Lesotho’s under-17 side has the potential to grow into a stronger and more competitive team in the years to come.

As the COSAFA tournament continues without Lesotho, the focus now shifts to strengthening the national youth football structures and ensuring that this experience becomes a stepping stone for future success.
