Steady Progress on Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase II in Tšifa-li-Mali, Leribe

Construction is advancing steadily on the Lesotho Lowlands Water Development Project Phase II (LLWDP-II) in Tšifa-li-Mali, Leribe. The project aims to provide safe and reliable water access to thousands of residents and businesses in Leribe, Mafeteng, and Mohale’s Hoek.

LLWDP-II is a collaborative effort between the European Union in Lesotho, the World Bank Africa, the European Investment Bank (EIB), and the Lesotho Government. The partnership focuses on strengthening water infrastructure, improving service delivery, and ensuring long-term access to potable water.

A key component under construction is the 5 Megalitre (ML) reservoir at Tšifa-li-Mali. This reservoir is one of five planned under LLWDP-II and will significantly enhance water storage and distribution capacity across the project area. The development aims to establish a reliable lifeline of clean water, supporting households, businesses, and public services.

The project is being implemented in phases. The current phase prioritizes Leribe, with networks and infrastructure for Mafeteng and Mohale’s Hoek scheduled for subsequent stages. This phased approach ensures careful planning, efficient resource use, and timely delivery of services to all three districts.

LLWDP-II not only addresses water access challenges but also supports broader economic and social development. Reliable water supply contributes to improved health, stronger business operations, and enhanced community resilience.

Stakeholders have emphasized the importance of collaboration in achieving project goals. By leveraging international expertise, funding, and local knowledge, LLWDP-II sets a benchmark for sustainable water management in Lesotho.

The project represents a major step toward ensuring equitable access to clean water across the Lowlands, supporting Lesotho’s long-term development and improving the quality of life for thousands of residents.
